“I love music,” the O’Jays once sang, “just as long as it’s groovin’.” Basement Jaxx take that credo to heart, expanding it to prove that anything they like can co-exist with their club-ready beats. “Just put a record on, maybe a country song,” sings Vula Malinga to a potential conquest on “Take Me Back to Your House,” over a plucking banjo that’s eventually met by a marching band’s drumline and ’70s-vintage disco strings. (None of which undercuts the song’s emotional fragility.) “Hey U” starts as epic Western-movie music before visiting a Bollywood soundstage with a klezmer band who’ve hitched a ride. And “Run 4 Cover” suggests prolonged exposure to Nortec Collective’s blend of traditional Mexican forms and techno. Best of all, none of this ever feels forced; it’s the soundtrack of a kicky tour demonstrating that all the world’s a dance floor.

May become a five with time
This album is a real grower. Stand out tracks for me are Hush Boy (the remix is better than the album version) Take me back to your house, Hey U, Run 4 Cover (got to hear this live!)and Everybody. Only complaint is it appears a short album, only 9 actual tracks (some no more than a couple of minutes) The other tracks are a bit more 'urban'. Good for what they are, but dont think they will work live for the Jaxx. I would like to see an experimental album where they do go a bit deeper underground in the future.
Hold on a sec
To be honest, the first listen wasn't exactly what I was expectin, a departure from what you might expect from the Jaxx, but give the album a couple more listens and let the tracks sink in and then you understand that, while not the out and out bangers of past albums, it's more of a reflection of the duo learning that, sometines, less is more. While it's great to have an album that people instantly love, it's more rewarding to have one that you delve into and finding out more about that surprises you in a good way, for instance Everybody just way well be my new fave track. Give the album time to grow and it rewards, don't expect more Remedy, Rooty or Kish Kash instant rewards.
Play it a few times!!!!
wasn't sure first time around but this album really grows on you. Lots of world influences - the gypsy of Hey U, country rhythms of Take me Back to your House as well as fun tracks like Run 4 Cover. Play it a few times, play it loud, you will love it I guarantee.
