Album Review
Over the course of the two EPs leading up to the release of their first album, Denmark’s Northern Portrait made their love of jangling guitars, sweet melodies, and the Smiths, specifically the vocals of Morrissey, very clear. Criminal Art Lovers takes the template of the EPs and increases the melodic quotient and boosts the jangle perceptibly. The opening tracks "The Münchhausen in Me" and "When Goodness Falls" promise an album of sugar-coated melancholy indie pop gems, and the rest of the affair lives up to the promise. The sound the trio creates is nearly perfect East Village/Commotions-style sophisti-pop with layers of acoustic and electric guitars shimmering like the surface of a lake on a summer day, the drums bolstered by tambourines and subtle keys adding some smooth texture. It’s the kind of sound made for a walk through the park with the sunlight filtering down through the trees, warming your sad heart. The only problem is with Stefan Larsen's vocals. Well, it’s a problem if you find the arch, affected vocal style popularized by Morrissey to be a distraction. Larsen is so in thrall to the style that it’s a little hard to take his lyrics seriously and his yodeling falsetto swoops and self-conscious twists effectively ruin the mood at times. He sounds more interested in being interesting than conveying any emotion. Whether or not the record works is probably down to the listener’s tolerance for Larsen's vocals, which is too bad since the music is so well constructed and pretty.

Absolute Magic
Ok, this CD and Northern Portrait's are maybe not the most original sounding ground breaking songs but they are fantastic. Northern Portrait, in my opinion, are The Smiths, Gene & Trashcan Sinatras all rolled into one, so how can that be a bad thing? It isn't!
Favourites on this CD are The Munchhausen In Me, When Goodness Falls, The Operation Worked and New Favourite Moment. When Goodness Falls is my favourite but there are no bad tracks on here at all, they all have great melodies and toe-tapping beats!
But this CD and then buy Trashcan Sinatras - In The Music ;)
Best album of 2010 so far, and unlikely to be beaten!
I first heard Northern Portrait at the Indietracks festival in the summer of 2009, which was quite some time after they had first released their "The Fallen Aristocracy" and "Napolean Sweetheart" EPs and I hadnt heard them first time round! So there I was just popping along to the main stage not sure who I was about to see, when suddenly something happened. I fell in love with the music instantly.
I am not really of The Smiths generation, so whilst I like some of their music, I probably would skip past a fair few of their album tracks. And whilst Northern Portrait arent as groundbreaking as they were, and have been likened to their musical style a great deal (some would say copycats), in my opinion they are far better than them! That is because there is not one song on either EP or the album that I would knowingly skip past - they are just all wonderfully crafted indie pop songs. Much like The Organ, who were also very much influenced by The Smiths, who I also couldnt get enough of, both bands put their own sound on top and this makes for the most easy to listen to record for years!
I would highly recommend for fans of The Smiths, The Organ, Cats on Fire or any similar style band, but equally for anyone who just likes good pop songs. Love it!
jingly jangly tastic
this was recommended to me last year, I'd never heard of the band but the recommendation was so strong I gave it a go. It's without a doubt the best jingly jangly indie pop album you'll ever own, beautiful chiming guitars, a vocal sometimes compared to Mozzer but I think is closer to Martin Rossiter and tunes to die for. An album guaranteed to put a smile on your face, buy it today!
