Album Review

California retro-metal band Holy Grail were formed in 2008 by three disgruntled ex-members of White Wizzard. Adding a bassist and a second guitarist to their core lineup, they released a 7" EP, Improper Burial, the CD version of which included two covers — Judas Priest's "Exciter" and Accept's "Fast as a Shark" — that showed quite clearly where they were coming from. On their full-length debut, they're proving themselves to be old-school metal warriors, their sound rooted in the early-'80s, pre-thrash. There are guitar solos erupting all over this disc, and song titles like "Fight to Kill," "Call of Valhalla," "Immortal Man," etc., etc. The songs are about death, terror, and all the classic larger-than-life metal subjects, and some of them — "Call of Valhalla" in particular — are damn catchy. The band even gets to explore its quiet, more introspective side on the instrumental "Nocturne in D Minor." When they get too close to contemporary sounds, as on "Requiem," they wind up sounding too much like Shadows Fall, but overall, this is a very solid full-length debut from a bunch of talented semi-newcomers. The great White Wizzard schism of 2008 seems to have been a boon for metal in general, as there are now two good bands in the place formerly occupied by only one.

Possibly the best album this year!

Holy Grail may be new but they aren't messing about with their debut it may be the finest album to come out of the recent trad metal movement. Other bands may have tried to revive the old school metal sound, but Holy Grail have taken that sound and made it new and fresh. The riffs on this album are spectacular, somewhat very similar to Avenged Sevenfold. Obvious influences behind the vocals are the greats; Rob Halford, Dio, Udo, you get the picture. From the drums we can hear a technicality to that of Lamb of God and with the drums comes the bass that just pounds away in the background with all the agression. This band is truly a great machine that will have the future eating out of their hands if they carry on creating music as good as this. The best song on this album has to be Fight to Kill, sounding 100 times better than the one of Improper Burial. Even though that may be the best they easily stay right behind that song with songs nearly as good as it and they could even be better in another persons eyes. Songs such as My Last Attack, Call of Valhalla, Crisis in Utopia, The Blackest Night and Chase the Wind, all these songs could possibly be a great in the future. This album is hard to beat with choruses to sing and pump your fists in air and riffs that could inspire a whole new generation, the power of Holy Grail is astounding. I'm with Holy Grail to the bitter end, are you?
