iTunes Review
Rather than issue a “Greatest Hits” collection to sum up their past twenty years, the Black Crowes decided to eyeball their catalog and reinvent their favorite tunes with acoustic arrangements. It’s an obvious move for a band that has always held onto their rock and pre-rock roots. Their Southern charm, where they’ve taken back roots music from their British rock heroes (the Rolling Stones, the Faces), has never let them down as long as singer Chris Robinson can knowingly leer into the lyrics. Acoustic or not, the funk is still there for the sweaty workouts of “Remedy”, “Jealous Again” and “Downtown Money Waster”, while an elegiac mood carries “She Talks to Angels”, “Ballad In Urgency” and Gram Parsons’ “She”. The electric organ provides the extra boost to help these acoustic guitar-wielding rockers over the classic rock mountain. Bonus tracks, “Boomer’s Story” and Little Feat’s “Willin’” are welcomed additions to what is fast becoming an impeccable catalog of tunes. Their 2008 comeback Warpaint reinvigorated the band and Before the Frost/ Until the Freeze solidified their place as one of America’s finest rock ‘n’ roll bands.

Fantastic album
Black Crowes Croweology is spinetingling, goosebumpy and an utterly marvellous, joyous, transcendent listen all the way through.
So many "oh yes" moments, I've lost count.
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou.
Wonderful.
The Black Crowes (gently) Rock !
Having been a fan from the time of the 1st album I can honestly say I've never tired of The Crowes. Why they aren't more successful I still can't figure out. That said, the last 2 or 3 albums have been quite low key affairs despite some of the best new material for a while. Surely some publicity / advertising regarding each new release wouldn't go amiss ?
Essential buy as always :o)
Not JUST for the die hard fans
The write up says that this will appeal to the fans that have been around for the two amazing decades that the Crowes have been active. I disagree a little, it's not JUST for the die hards in the same way that the Lost Crowes set is/was.
These new arrangements stand up well enough on their own to attract fans both new and old. Still holding true to the blues rock scene that they came out of, these semi-unplugged versions of some classics give the sense of a band of friends having fun with what they do. Rich Robinson's guitar work is nothing short of spectacular in places, check out the middle 8 of Thorn In My Pride.
The 'new' version of Good Friday is spine-tinglingly touching, truly evoking the breakup sentiment in the lyrics. The almost 10 minute version of Wiser Time (one of my all time favourites) is also an absolute work of genius. Of course, the staple Crowes track that most people will know is Remedy and it doesn't disappoint.
Not quite a 'greatest hits' album, not really a covers album, certainly a work of art and a genuinely exciting album.
It's a shame they are off on yet another 'break' now as this would really make for a brilliant live show.
As a massive Crowes fan, I'm gushing at this record. Fantastic.
However, even if you aren't overly familiar with their back catalogue, I urge you to check out the previews here.
This could just be one of the albums of the year.
