Album Review

A transition album of sorts, Dance saw Numan departing from the jerky machine music of his synth pop prime to embrace a (bit) warmer sound that is less robotic and more free-form. The subject matter on highlights like "She's Got Claws," "Slowcar to China," "Cry the Clock Said," and "Crash" are quintessentially Numan, but their musical frameworks are quite far removed from early hits like "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "Cars."

Not commercial, but underrated

Given that his previous three albums – Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon – had all reached the number one spot in the UK charts, Dance – which went only to number three – was a relative commercial failure. But it was a surprisingly brave album, better than its chart position suggests. A first track nine minutes long was never designed to appeal to the masses, and of the other tracks on the original release, only She's Got Claws was ever deemed poppy enough for a single release [Stormtrooper in Drag was also released as a single but under bass player Paul Gardiner's name]. But songs like Cry the Clock Said and A Subway Called "You" reveal polished songwriting and this album is perhaps Numan's most underrated gem.

The man nobody wanted to know!!

I remember buying this albumn the first time out on ' vinyl ' and was astonished even then. The songs, compared to what had gone before, were so different musically that other ' Numanoids ' and myself didn't know quite how to take it! You still have echoes of ' Replicas ' in Night Talk and You Are, You Are but now we had melodic rythmns as in Slowcar To China and Cry The Clock Said. As well as the awesome Moral! And do I detect early Hip Hop in Boys Like Me? No wonder the top American DJ's and top performers like Armand van Helden like this guy! Buy this albumn with the knowledge that you WILL enjoy it - even if you have never heard of Gary Numan.

More like 9.2 out of 10

I was a bit weary about giving this album a go but i am so glad i did as the album is a much underated glittering jewel with classics all round. This is certainly Numan's most beautiful album with the greats such as "Dance", "I sing rain", "Exhibition" and the wonderful "Cry the clock said". The album is undeniably much slower as a whole than Numan's previous 3 and a lot less synthy, but hugely underated classics shine through such as "Face to Face" and "You are, You are". A stellar album which shifts a little too much away for some from his previous three albums...

One of the founding fathers of synth pop, Gary Numan's influence extends far beyond his lone American hit, "Cars," which still stands as one of the defining new wave singles. That seminal track helped usher in the synth pop era on both sides of the Atlantic, especially his native U.K., where he was a genuine pop star and consistent hitmaker during the early '80s. Even after new wave had petered out, Numan's impact continued to make itself felt; his dark, paranoid vision, theatrically icy alien persona,...
