Album Review

Though a departure from their previous works, Dark on Fire is a welcome change for Turin Brakes that should appeal to fans old and new. The group flirts with both garage rock and new wave/post-punk revival on this offering, but don't settle on either style. Rather than sounding inconsistent, the approach emphasizes the indie rockers' versatility and showcases Olly Knights' haunting, unconventional vocals. Dark on Fire is evenly divided between introspection and more upbeat (if not cheerful) numbers, though their ability to work as a well-honed ensemble is a constant throughout. The album does tend toward the lighter side — even the more rollicking songs aren't particularly hard or heavy — and has a certain transparency to it, with each layer (vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and occasionally piano, strings, or keyboards) clearly audible and given equal weight.

Nowhere is this more evident than on the album's title track. Beginning with muted guitar chords and a nearly androgynous vocal delivery from Knights (who is matched by the tight harmonies from fellow guitarist/vocalist Gale Paridjanian), "Dark on Fire" builds slowly, eventually integrating strings and understated percussion. It's ethereal, moving and quietly powerful, with a chorus that ebbs, flows and lingers even after the song is over. Its placement in the middle of the album seems deliberate — preceded and followed by more guitar-driven numbers, the song is set apart, making its stark emotion even more pronounced. Beyond the album's centerpiece, Dark on Fire has much more to offer. Each of the album's tracks is strong enough to stand on its own; there is enough variation among the songs to keep things interesting, but enough stylistic cohesion to avoid any jarring inconsistencies. The first two tracks, "Last Chance" and "Ghost," immediately make the case for Turin Brakes' strengths, highlighting both the band's refined approach and cool attitude. The combination does make for a misstep with the somewhat overwrought "New Star" ("Here Comes the Moon" would have made a fine closer), but it's forgivable for a band that branches out with beautiful results.

Outstanding as ever

Another treat from the TB boys. Dark on Fire is a beautiful LP with the band going for a slightly grittier sound but retaining the class of old. There's a lovely concept here of seeing the toughness of life with a fiercely determined attitude. Life affirming stuff. Highly Recommended.

Dark On Fire - First Listen

Excellent, it really is. I'm a massive fan and tend to like all their stuff and I'm sure this will grow on me even more than it already has. The bonus tracks are certainly good enough to be on the album so get those as well..... In a muscial period where so many artists get a basic 'catchy' sound and flog it to death each of these songs are all individual pieces that stand alone (yet collectively) and cover a variation of topics and moods. Very pleased with the purchase, look forward to seeing them on tour soon!

Not quite entirely excellent but still a very good album!

I am still amazed that Turin Brakes have managed so far to be missed by many listeners. This album builds on the previous efforts from the band and whilst it may not be entirely blessed with being filled with every song being a classic it is still able to capture this bands uniquely distinct sound coupled with genuinely interesting lyrics. Dont listen once and make a judgement listen lots as its one of those albums that you need to get into!

Formed: 1999 in Balham, London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Often compared to Coldplay and Travis, Turin Brakes were an English, folk-inspired duo that hailed from Balham, London. Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian were friends in elementary school and decided to try out for the cathedral choir because it would perform in front of the Queen of England, which it eventually did. The two aspiring musicians, influenced by a unique range of artists that included Sebadoh, Truman's Water, Prince, and the Black Crowes, formed a band and recorded their freewheeling...
