Album Review

Queen’s Deep Cuts series collects tracks from the band’s catalog that were never released as singles, and so wouldn’t usually find their way onto a standard greatest-hits compilation. The second volume focuses on 1977-1982, a prolific period for Queen, who released five albums during those years. It was also a time when Queen moved away from their traditional hard rock sound and began to experiment with different musical styles., Rovi

Majestic

Another great compilation of Queen's album-hidden songs. As a dedicated Queen fan for many years, I can safely say that this selection is good one, and you won't be disappointed if your purchase this. Dragon Attack is excellent, as is Sail Away Sweet Sister and Staying Power. I think if they make a 3rd Deep Cuts then it won't be at all as good. Queen's best work was before 1980. Get both of the Deep Cuts, they very good and it's a good idea to put their lesser known songs in an album. Five stars.

Deep trouble

Queen were a magically gifted band, and even their mediocre stuff was often better than the best others had (and still have) to offer. Yet -if this second volume of Deep Cuts proves anything, is that the band were in (artistic) trouble for the whole five years this collection spans. None of these tracks can hide the fact that the spark that fired brilliant pieces like 'The March of the Black Queen' or Brian's overlooked gems like ''39' had gone, and that now there were four egos fighting to get their say -not really working as a band at all. Once again, the songs aren't really bad (well,'Dragon Attack' and 'Staying Power' are probably the lowest they could ever sink), but their artistic quality comes nowhere near their early stuff, or the much more exciting material towards the end of their career. 'Deep Cuts I' is a must have and Deep Cuts III certainly won't disappoint you, but from Deep Cuts II all you need is one or two songs to remember that even the greatest of artists have their (very) bad moments.

Biography

Formed: 1971 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey. For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with the legions...
