It's Been A Long Time... But Perfection Has Been Reached

Desire shows why Pharoahe Monch has been sorely missed and more, producing an album that is artistic perfection, not just in hip-hop, but music in general. This album totally side-steps from what seems to have become the 'norm' in hip-hop, and he subsequently breathes fresh new life into the genre 1. Intro - A short clever intro that really sets the mood of the album with it's soulful gospel feel 2. Free - An explosive opening track that see's Pharoahe Monch drawing parallels between the music business and slavery with dynamic lyrics in a classic rock & hip-hop fusion, a fantastic opening. 9.5/10 3. Desire - Pharoahe Monch ladens this track with mouth-dropping lyrics, flexing his ability over a soulful beat, showing his 'desire' to make great music, brilliant song 9.5/10 4. Push - Pharoahe Monch take a new direction here, predominantly singing over a motown reminiscent song. He doesn't actually rap till the latter part of the song. Fresh and excellent to say the least 10/10 5. Welcome to the Terrordome - Public enemy fans will feel at home with this song. Pharoahe Monch comes strong on his version of a classic Public Enemy track, highlighting the corrupt nature of the American government. 8.5/10 6. What It Is - The only track so far that doesn't have a powerful, definitive meaning and isn't really clear in it's approach. Still good though, as Pharoahe Monch raps on a dark gritty beat 8/10 7. When The Gun Draws - Pharoahe Monch cleverly takes the roll as a bullet, personifying it to highlight gun viloence. A dark beat that brilliantly highlights the nature of the song 9/10 8. Let's Go - Pharoahe Monchs twisting and clever word-play makes it more than a worthy listen, but in terms of the feeling gained from songs, its not as strong as the rest. The part at the end of the track is hilarious though 7/10 9. Body Baby - A song that is bound to leave people split down the middle. Personally I think the Elvis-like chorus blended the with motown swing feel of the song and Pharoahe Monch's rapping make it a fabulous experimental effort that comes off really strong and shows the range hip-hop can reach. Excellent 9.5/10 10. Bar Trap - Simple scenario here: Pharoahe Monch is trying to get the girl at the bar. A nice laid-back track, adding more diversity to the album, without being out of place 8/10 11. Hold On - A beautiful track that highlights the situation of a girl who is bullied due to her heritage, but it's really a blessing. Emotion provoking lyrics with a clever Erykah Badu feature for the chorus making it all perfect 10/10 12. So Good - A deep love track reminiscent of the Roots, definately one for the ladies and a nice chill-out song 8/10 13. Trilogy - Powerful, immersive, perfect. The album's closing song and deservedly so with Pharoahe Monch pushing the envolope in creativity, bringing a three-part song based on a complex situation set-up due to cheating and murder. Each Act tells a different part of the story, bringing a different feel due to the situation being told. The featured artists and the instrumentals for each Act are flawless, and all three collate acts collate perfectly. Thought provoking, launching your feelings into the song. A fitting ending to a masterpiece. 14. Agent Orange (bonus track) - A bonus track that actually deserves to be on the album. Exercising the anti Present American Government theme, it's in the same vein as the rest of the album, with hard-hitting lyrics and a hard-hitting beat 8.5/10 The album is truly a great artistic statement, especially for hip-hop as it is everything that people don't perceive hip-hop to be and more, taking things in a more positive direction. A must have, a monumental return 10/10

Solid

Free - I love the tempo of this track 8/10 Desire - One of the best, if not the best track in the album 9/10 Push - Not that impressed, boring beat in my opinion 5/10 Welcome to the Terrordome - Not a bad track at all. Does well to replicate Public Enemy 6/10 What it Is - Too repetitive 5/10 When the Gun Draws - Very interesting track. Great lyrics, decent beat 7/10 Let's Go - Very upbeat, reminds me of Free but not as good 7/10 Body Baby - sounds cheap to begin with, but quite catchy after a while. To be honest, it seems like a cheap ploy to make some good cash but I do like a the hook 7/10 Bar Tap - Nice track, but a bit too sugary sweet for me 6/10 Hold On - Very nice track 8-10 So Good - very slow and chilled out but I ain't a huge fan of these love tunes 6/10 Trilogy - Such a crazy song, so much to it! Awesome! 8/10 Agent Orange (Bonus) - Brilliant pace and lyrics. Up there with Desire as the best song on the album. Not sure why it is a 'Bonus'...but it is on the album, so that's what matters! 9/10 Overall, 7/10. Not an amazing album, but a lot of tracks worth checking out, in particular Desire and Agent Orange.
