iTunes Review
As far as Brighton, England’s British Sea Power are concerned, the 1980s never ended. Or at least the epic soundsweeps, the chiming U2-like guitars, the dramatic tension, the heavy reverbs of the recording era are not to be discarded. The quartet’s third album asks whether or not you like rock music, but the bigger, more accurate question is how far are you willing to explore this definition of rock music? Contrary to the suggestion, this isn’t barebones textbook rock n’ roll, but a glammy, glitzy whirlwind of dancefloor grooves, sleek nightclub sounds and abstract song concerns ( Fellas, what exactly are “sodium-scarred wailing weeks”?). Recorded in Canada, the UK and the Czech Republic (in the forests of the Krivoklatsko Biosphere Reserve?), Rock Music plays as one long, flowing night of promised romance and escapism, until you realize “Canvey Island” is about the North Sea Flood that claimed 48 lives. “Down on the Ground” swirls like the Cure at their poppiest moments without Robert Smith’s strangulated whine to jam things up. “Lights Out for Darker Skies” expands and tempo-shifts over six and half minutes. So the real question: are you up for the British Sea Power challenge?
Customer Reviews
The best thing you'll hear all year...
Ignore the first review, while I'm sure he meant well BSP sound nothing like Joy Division and even less like the Editors. I'm not going to compare them to anyone, but tell you that every song on this album is carefully crafted, amazingly played and has a sound so massive compared to their last, Open Season, that it can barely be contained. For a sample try the Krankenhaus? EP on for size and if you like, you'll positively love this album. BSP deserve to go overground and make plenty of new fans with this release, and I can't wait to hear them play it live...
Put on your Sou' Wester,
charge your iPod, grab a few tins of sardines and a flask of strong tea and get a trusty local trawlerman to take you up to Mingulay and drop you off. Spend the day gazing out into the Atlantic and befriending the Puffins whilst listening to this singular and mighty piece of work. Utterly unique, utterly sublime.
I like Rock Music?
I have been a fan of many a band in my years on this earth, some have come and gone, some have stayed, some were of different genres but nearly all have one thing in common, they failed to produce at album three. British sea power have always surprised and excited me, but this is the biggest surprise yet a quality 3rd album! right from the off you will be sucked in by the warm christmas glow of the intro "all in it" then thrust in to the 80`s indie/rock trio of "Lights Out..","No Lucifer" and the heavenly "Waving flags". One thing i have always found with British sea power`s albums, is that because of their broad range of styles on offer, their albums are always paced perfectly and this is the case here too. Around half way comes the euphoric and Sigur Ros-esq "The Great Skua", then after the fantastic "Atom" electrocutes your ears and "No Need To Cry" makes you...cry but with faint optimism, the album is rounded off with the almost too simple but very effective "Open The Door" and "We Close Our Eyes" (basically a companion song to "All In It"). This is by no means a perfect album, but as i write im hard pressed to think of one that is or even how you could make this album better, and with such strong songs like the ones mentioned, the fantastic football themed "Canvey Island" and the urgent indie rock epic of "Down On The Ground" you wont care about that as you go back for your 4th listen in a row and a satisfied smile on your face, confident that you have just bought the best album of this year.
