The Return of HEATON!
It's been 2 years since Heaton’s last official release and he returns with a killer first single. Don’t Wanna Be Lonely, co-written with Phil Ireland, shows a development in both style and substance and is a change in direction from his previous computer based electro pop. Heaton has spent the last 2 years writing with a variety of musicians both on and off the net. The most notable collaborations have been with Liam Frost, The Subway Collective, Oisin Scarlett, Tiv and of course Phil Ireland. In 2006 he released the fan-only album “Interlude” which was available for FREE download via his official website. The album brought together a collection of recorded demos both old and new, songs that like Heaton, were in a transition state, not quite ready for a general release. The new release is a confident up-beat acoustic/electro pop track. The kind of song which would stand up on it’s own with just a guitar or piano. The added, glitter if you like, has been provided by long time collaborators The Brooklyn Foundation who have managed to mix the best of what they do, with the new Heaton/Ireland songwriting chemistry. The single also includes new track “Try, Try, Try” which was written over a year ago with Oisin Scarlett, “Breathe” the much anticipated Subway Collective collaboration and remix of the title track by none other than the Brooklyn Foundation.
Let Heaton sooth you...
A change in direction for Heaton from his awesome and succesful COMPUTER MUSIC album should not put fans (or new listeners) off. This more 'organic' sound actually lets the softer tones of Heaton's voice shine through, and deliver these more bluesey songs in a deliciously warm and unpretentious way. "Lonely" balances funky acoustic guitars and gentle keyboard overdubs on a dirty R&B-flavoured rhythm track. The brilliantly bitter lyrics are both sad and archly funny at once: I mean, who's never been lonely and "wished the death of Whitney Houston" when hearing her wail on about the greatest love of all for the millionth time?! If you do miss the more electronic Heaton output, then the Brooklyn Beat remix should satisfy! Future-retro keys underline, redefine and drive the song brilliantly, with a lovely descending 80s-esque octave-bass-line on the bridge and some gorgeous pad chords decorating the secod verse. Love it! "Try Try Try" is Heaton's most stripped, acoustic offering yet, more proof of how uncomplicated, raw production allows his warm vocals to really shine. In contrast, the atmospheric "Breathe" is all gentle electronica, with waves of burbling synths and filtered pads washing in and out. Think William Orbit in his more restrained moments. It's an emotive soundtrack to accompany an almost whispered vocal of optimism and hope. In short, there's something for everyone on this EP, and it clearly demonstrates that Heaton's song-writing and vocal prowess progress way beyond the super-pop of "Let It Go"!
Heaton Rocks!
I first came across Heaton when he performed a live gig in Reading and I heard some of is amazing early tracks like 'one with you' and became a huge fan after he topped the Vitaminic chart with the dance stomper 'let it go'! As time goes on Heaton just gets better and better! His writing and production is solid and he is vocals are even more polished. I'm sure it won't be long before he get's snapped up by a record label...especially since he has schrewdly dropped his first name to become simply 'Heaton'! Then off course on top of his musical ability he's a real dish! Perfect pop package if you ask me! Rock on Heaton!
