iTunes Review
Donuts proves that the cliché about some people just having to make music is true: producer Jay Dee/J Dilla (Common, A Tribe Called Quest) reportedly completed much of the album in his hospital bed, using vinyl, a portable turntable and a Powerbook. One of the Slum Village founder’s last works before his death just after turning 32, this is a fantasia of loops, bringing together soft-soul guitar lines and verbal warnings (Eddie Kendricks: “People, the time has come”), an early electronic-music demo record, a yearning line from “For Once in My Life” and a holler from the Beasties’ “It’s the New Style” in a dreamscape that’s playful, challenging and repays the compulsive listening it invites. Included are “One for Ghost” and “Hi,” two beats Dilla provided for Ghostface’s Fishscale.
Customer Reviews
Best Hip Hop Production In A Long Time
Please do yourself a favor and cop this - Dilla is one of the hottest producers out there and this instrumental joint is butter. For those looking for the usual vanilla, stay on the top 40. If you're looking for substance, style and dope beats - you'll dig it more each time you spin it....trust me. Also listen out for the vocal remixes from people such as black thought, raw dice, oh no and rocc c. I have had this album on advance promo and listen to it almost every day - still going to get the proper copy also.
Essential mussic
This stunning album showcases a musician at the height of his creativity. Recorded in hospital while recovering from a disease (Lupus) which has now sadly claimed his life. Dilla will live forever through his music. The album is a crazy collection : 31 very brief beats (averaging 1min 30), but what beats! The samples - hugely varied- are worked over until they're barely recognizable. The end result is incredibly soulful. Never cluttered, simple yet with great depth. If you're unsure about downloading this, check the tracks The Diff'rence, Time:The Donut of The Heart, Airworks, Two Can Win, Dilla Says Go. But really, get the whole album to experience the full range of a true hip-hop hero. Rest in Peace Dilla
Fantastic Album
Fantastic soulful album, a must buy. R.I.P J Dilla
