iTunes Review

2007’s Drastic Fantastic, the follow-up to Scottish-born singer-songwriter KT Tunstall’s 2006 debut, Eye to the Telescope, begins with a ‘70s power-pop/New Wave flair that puts her within shooting distance of hard rock. For this pop-influenced folkie, it’s an unexpected but welcomed foray into new territory. “Little Favours” kickstarts things with impressively punchy guitars that are later called upon to support the irresistible snarl of “I Don’t Want You Now.” Tunstall turns to rainy day Parisian pop for “If Only” and “Hopeless,” sounding seductively dour as the indoor vibe of the intimate backing group takes over. But Tunstall isn’t all glam and mirrors, though her big choruses and heavily-processed guitars add up to an impressive modern rock approach. She can also deliver from the back porch, as the acoustic timbre of the countrified fingerpicking of “Someday Soon,” the wistful campfire folk of “Paper Aeroplane” and the nightclub smoke of “Beauty of Uncertainty” surely attest. Her ability to deliver in so many different situations make her a versatile, satisfying artist.

Just not up there

How do you follow an album like Eye to the Telescope? Well you probably cant but it doesn't sound like KT even tried. Or rather she has been 'produced' into something other than her true genius. This is a shame. Whilst every song on the album is truly listenable they are only marginally above average. Beautifully produced but lacking spirit. Fantastic lyrics with mediocre melodies. Sorry, Ireally really wanted to like it. Have a listen to Amy MacDonalds new album and compare.

What A Bonnie Wee Lass!!

Fantastic collection of songs from a fantastic songwriter!! Drastically different from her debut, but still as fantastic!! Plus, the facts shes Scottish makes it superb anyway!! XD

Different league

A lot of people will be fairly surprised by what they hear on this album. On the first listen it is very different, a lot more rock in some places but on closer listen, you can still hear the Tunstall trademarks. Her voice has grown, but the songs are still as good. Highlights are Saving My Face, If Only and Hopeless. White Bird and Beauty of Uncertainty are more typical KT tracks, and will stand out from the others. Overall, a brilliant album which is more radio-friendly, but will no doubt confirm KT's place among the best singer/songwriters in the UK.

Born in 1975, Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall — not short for anything, the KT is just an alternate spelling of Katie — comes from the quaint university town of St. Andrews. Due in part by being adopted at birth, her imagination and creative side flourished from early on as she thought about how her life could have gone in any given direction. As she was growing up, her physicist father would take Tunstall and her brothers into the St. Andrews observatory to look at the sky, thus...
