Album Review

When a remixed version of "Apologize" wound its way onto Timbaland Presents Shock Value in early 2007, OneRepublic was faced with an odd predicament — the group had a number one pop hit without an accompanying album. Dreaming Out Loud corrects that problem, delivering a marketable brand of piano-led pop/rock that recalls the melodies of the Fray and the vocal acrobatics of Maroon 5's Adam Levine. It's a testament to the band's talent that "Apologize" fares better in its original setting than in the Timbaland remix, most likely due to frontman Ryan Tedder's own experience as a producer. To his credit, Tedder was one of the industry's hottest commodities in 2007, co-writing material for Hilary Duff, Ashley Tisdale, and Natasha Bedingfield while producing tracks for Jennifer Lopez and American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis. He's saved some of his best work for OneRepublic's Dreaming Out Loud, but the rules are different here; his band doesn't have the brand-name appeal of Duff or Lopez, and they certainly can't expect the guaranteed audiences that Lewis and Disney megastar Tisdale enjoy. As a result, the album sounds slightly derivative, almost as if it's mimicking the popular trends that Tedder personally helped to create. "All We Are" sounds particularly Fray-like, with Tedder's affable vocals wailing a radio-ready melody over layers of piano and swelling guitar. Elsewhere, the ghost of Coldplay looms large, even if OneRepublic often favors cathartic, cranked-up choruses that Chris Martin has yet to tackle. Yet despite these similarities, Tedder's vocals outshine those of his past clients, and the bulk of his band's debut is cohesive and smoothly pleasant, although not altogether original. [Interscope's 2007 Target Exclusive edition featured two bonus tracks.]

They are underated!

I think one republic should be up there with the coldplays, Fall out boys, and the killers etc. Instead there stuck around 75th on top songs. Come on! Stop and stare is my favorite because i sometimes think apologise is to much a mixture of genres. Mercy is a nice song. Click if you think one republic are underated also! cant wait till there next album!

An overall good debut album!

There's no denying OneRepublic's musical connection with the Fray as they both sound very similiar, emotion packed, drony piano songs which have catchy hooks that never leave your head (mostly thanks to Ryan Tedder's talent, who's written quite a few songs hitting the charts at the minute, including Leona's 'Bleeding Love') The stand out tracks from OneRepublic's debut album are 'Stop and Stare' and 'Apologize' (the original though is miles better than the remix) and obviously so since they're the lead singles however there are a few other good songs on here. Particular ones I like after a few listens are 'Say (All I need)', 'Mercy', 'Tyrant' and 'Come Home'. The album as a whole is good though but apart from the ones I've mentioned I'm not sure if the others would warrant a download on their own since they really just 'bulk up' the album and that's not to say they're not bad songs, many are good, but they often go on a little too long and get abit samey. Still, I'd recommend buying the whole album as it's one of the best this year (I know we're only in March but it's certainly a good start!) and if you're not sure about buying then listen to Apologize (the original) and if you like it then I'm sure you;ll probably like the rest of the album!

A Good Fray Album

This album is, admittably, very good. However, the problem here is that it's not OneRepublic's album: It is more a selection of other artists that they have been "inspired" by, so it almost sounds like a rip-off. Indeed, the opening to All Fall Down is so much like Oasis' Talk Tonight it often makes me think iTunes as gone onto shuffle. It's worth buying, but you'll fine nothing here you haven't heard before, and may be better purchasing the more original and, arguably, better Fray album, How To Save A Life.

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Colorado Springs, CO

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Featuring the anthemic songwriting of Ryan Tedder, OneRepublic rose to prominence in 2007, when "Apologize" began its reign as the most popular digital download in American history. Although the song proved to be a quick success, OneRepublic had spent five years touring the musical minor leagues before its release, with Tedder splitting his time between the band's work and production gigs for other artists. Tedder and Zach Filkins formed the band in 2002 and relocated to Los Angeles shortly thereafter,...
