an epic meditation on intangibility

Before Duke I really didn't understand any of Genesis' work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It's on Duke where Phil Collins' presence becomes more apparent. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship and the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.

The point of no return

This album (for me at least) marked the point at which Genesis songwriting transformed into very good MOR. You could see it coming once Steve Hackett left (And Then There Were Three) as a big slice of that very English/classical/electro-folk (!) Genesis sound from the 70's drifted away. The musical pull of the only just orbiting Phil Collins starts to make itself heard in Duke. There are some lovely songs here (Duchess, Heathaze, Please Don't Ask), but this album sounds like some of it dovetails with PCs first solo album in 1981 'Face Value' (which indeed uses a little re-vamped Duke on it). It's still a cut above the rest, But if you want to go looking for good Genesis - Go Back Young Man/Woman, not forward!

Remastered? Not really...

Love the album, but all these Genesis 'Remasters' sound awful compared to the originals – it's like they've just put loads of EQ on and stuffed it through a compressor. It all sounds too bright and too compressed. Horrible. Buy the originals instead. Much nicer to listen to.

In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups,...
