iTunes Review

The owner of one of the most American voices you're ever likely to hear also has acres of musical experience behind him. Levon Helm was an Arkansas boy who had barely become a man before music whisked him off to a life touring behind Bob Dylan and ultimately becoming the anchor behind the Band — one of the best bands ever to bubble up out of the soil of North America. Now he returns with Electric Dirt, follow-up to the successful Dirt Farmer of 2007. His voice is weathered but iron-strong and he's brought together a group which obviously shares his love of traditional folk, New Orleans shuffle, boogie blues, and soulful country. Tackling songs by the Stanley Brothers, the Staple Singers, Randy Newman, and Muddy Waters — and knocking them out with pride and joy — the album is resolute triumph.

A career highlight

This will prove to be one of the great albums of the year and of his amazing career.

even better than Dirt Farmer!

a great soul stew of an album encompassing americana, gospel, blues, country, rootsy r&b. If you like the Band (obviously) or Springsteen or Neil Young check this out. As far as I'm concerned despite not writing most of these tracks, Levon has made them his own. Highlights for me Tennessee Jed, Growing Trade & I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free
