While most rappers give answers, DJ Shadow questions his audience. What does your soul look like? What does midnight in a perfect world sound like? How can you build steam with a grain of salt? This Davis, California DJ thinks visually, to the point that the mid-song interludes on "Transmission 1-3" seem influenced by the movie Angel Heart. Throughout, Shadow weaves sampled elements (sustained piano loop and a tricked-out chorale over a beat) into a beautiful suite. All cracks and pops on the album are real, a remnant of Endtroducing's magical cut-and-paste art form. This sonic confessional was just what hip-hop needed in 1996-a temperate, patient instrumental record filled with moods and emotions that still linger and resonate today.

This Album Changed My Life

During the 90's I was riding the crest of the BritPop wave and went to see Radiohead at the NEC. I used to cus DJ's as talentless fools. I was ready to do the same with Shadow until I heard what he did that night with an MPC2000 and two 1210's. Within a year I had sold my guitars, bought my first DJ set-up and have never looked back. I can only echo what so many other people have said - this is musical perfection. Intelligent, moving and most importantly a representation of everything which is good about HipHop - something we badly need these days. One of THE most important albums of the last 25 years in my humble opinion. Buy it, love it, then buy it again on vinyl, as if nothing else this is a tribute to vinyl culture and the art of crate digging.

A groundbreaking album

Its hard to put into words how utterly fantastic this album is. Consisting wholly of samples, DJ Shadow has created songs that take your emotions on a mad rollercoaster journey. From the scratch-laden schizophrenic sound of "The Number Song" to the almost hypnotic chill out melody & drum beat of "Midnight in a Perfect World" its an album that just sounds effortlessly perfect. To this day it remains one of the most original albums ever made - truly groundbreaking, it not only changed the face of hip hop & dance music but changed the face of music in general. A true classic, it should be in the collection of any music lover.

DJ Shadow's Josh Davis is widely credited as a key figure in developing the experimental instrumental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax label.
