Album Review

The first solo album by British producer and remixer DJ Fresh (a longtime mover in the global drum'n'bass underground who runs a popular website and message board besides his prodigious list of credits), Escape from Planet Monday is straightforward club-oriented dance music with a handful of pop elements. Although the grooves are paramount throughout this 70-minute set, DJ Fresh (aka Dan Stein) fashions his beats into proper songs, with guest vocals from Apollo 440's Mary Byker and the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, who provides his inimitable vocals on the epic, spacy album closer, "Throw," over a bed of pinging synth washes and a Spanish-style acoustic guitar. Turntablist supreme DJ Shadow provides another key guest spot, providing vintage horn and vocal parts on the slinky groove "Closer," the album's most immediately effective track. However, most of Escape from Planet Monday is a one-man affair, and DJ Fresh is structurally clever and musically aware enough to keep the album interesting and varied throughout.

Can't begin to compare Fresh with Pendulum

Fresh has always been the most inovative of new school drum and bass producers, countless 'Bad Company' records that are in the box! Since going solo he has been made some really weird music, but has also continued making as good a record that would be on the Ram or Virus labels...and this album is unquestionably very good! ps: Breakbeat Kaos is about 5 years old and Pendulum made their first hit in 2004.......Fresh has been making hit Drum and Bass records since 1995.....so compare him to Pendulum....Pendulum will never make records like "Space dust" or "Dogs on the moon".........not in a million years!

Outstanding

After hearing Zane Lowe play "The Immortal" on Radio 1 a few weeks ago I knew I had to track down the rest of the album. It doesn't disappoint; "All That Jazz" is another stand-out track (you'll be singing along after the first listen), and "Submarines" is excellent too. It makes fantastic driving music. :)

A true lesson in D'n'B for even the most veteran

With this album, Fresh has taken drum and bass music to the next level. The production quality and sheer creativity is un-matched. Fresh has truely tested the boundries of this genre within his tunes, fusing them with funk, jazz, even the kitchen sink. The live flute on pink panther is the most impressive thing i've hered in D'n'B this year. This is by no means an "average" drum & bass album! Buy it, listen... be amazed!!

Biography

Genre: Dance

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Born in 1977, Dan Stein, aka DJ Fresh, is one of the most influential figures on the U.K. drum'n'bass scene. Influenced by tapes brought back from illegal raves by older friends, he bought his first turntables in his teens, and while at university, started playing late-night sets on local pirate radio stations. In 1999, as part of the drum'n'bass collective Bad Company, he founded record label BC Recordings and the scene's most popular website, Dogs on Acid. After leaving to pursue a solo career,...
