iTunes Review

My Morning Jacket represent an interesting piece of rock terrain for 2008. Their influences are clearly retro, found in the ‘60s pop of Jimmy Webb and Glen Campbell (“Librarian”), the ‘70s AM soft-rock vibe of “Thank You, Too”, the southern rock full guitar and harmony attack of “I’m Amazed”, the nod to the Raspberries with “Two Halves”, and the nearly out of context falsetto, mock disco accents of the title track and “Highly Suspicious”, where singer Jim James sounds a bit like Beck imitating Prince. These eclectic juxtapositions keep this Louisville, Kentucky quintet entertained with themselves and that amusement sends out an excited aura that’s palpable throughout this sprawling, ambitious album. There’s still a little extra reverb in spots and lots of electric guitar to sift through (check the stereo mix of “Remnants” for old school guitar wars), but this is clearly their most straight-forward album to date. The best moments move quick, as it’s the album’s hummable midsection (“Librarian”, “Look At You” and the classic rock guitars of “Aluminum Park”) that carries this album to sweet victory.

Brilliant......

This album, in my opinion, has some of MMJ's best songs on it. They still make use of their characteristic harmonies and genius bass lines, but it still sounds fresh and original. "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream" (both parts, but especially pt. 1) proves why this band gets the recognition they deserve, as they can continue to deliver powerful and captivating music. "Thank You Too!" manages to be both sad and uplifting, complete with heart-wrenching lyrics ("I want to take you for all that you are/I know our worlds seem far apart"). "Librarian", although slightly weird, does have its moments. However, some of the songs don't have the same magic, and are abit to classic country for my taste, which is why I decided against giving this album five stars.

Ingenious

Easily the best album I have heard this year. Evil Urges takes the listener on a rollercoaster ride through a plethora of sounds, styles and emotions without deviating from a perfectly flowing album. The physics should not work as there are clear influences from country, funk, folk, rock and even an addition to dance thrown into the mixed up melting pot - but it does. The production is also second to none. Deep, bold bossy bass amd perfectly mixed harmonies is the signature of this album which never fails to satisfy the senses as it ducks and dives through varying rhythms, styles and colourful designs. In my opinion, this album should be reognised as one of the greats. It is third in my list of all time favourites behind Jeff Buckley's Grace and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Great Album

This is a very solid album. Most of the songs sound really old, as if the album was recorded in the 60s/70s. Thank You Too, Sec Walking and Librarian are stand out tracks and Highly Suspicious and Evil Urges sound like Prince - very strange songs but very likeable. Lots of different styles on this album, its great to hear a band experiment so much.

Although they first presented themselves as devotees of Neil Young's country-tinged classic rock, My Morning Jacket widened their sound throughout the early 2000s, embracing everything from neo-psychedelia to Americana, funk, prog, and reggae. By the time Evil Urges arrived in mid-2008, they had successfully molded themselves into Kentucky's answer to Wilco: a band...
