Customer Reviews

One of the most beautiful albums I've heard in a long time...

This is a hauntingly beautiful album, though I disagree with the previous reviewer on the highlights... which I suppose points to the fact that there's something on here for all tastes... Dowie Dens of Yarrow is possibly one of the most heart-rending, amazing track with lyrics which yield new meanings on each new listening. Thou Hast Left Me Ever Jamie is a completely different tempo, and style - lending credence to karine Polwart's range. Mirk Mirk is another haunting melody with interesting lyrics - a lot slower and more thoughtful than what's gone before. Birks of Invermay is another joyful track whose lyrics match... Its perfect for a sunny spring day... I could wax lyrical about each and every track, but the other special mention, in my mind, goes to The Death of Queen Jane... This is a gorgeous song full of sadness in the lyrics and joy and hope in the singing. I almost cry each and every time I listen to it... Get this album even if you aren't a die-hard folk fan... It deserves a listen by everyone. Each listening improves one's aquaintance with the lyrics, allowing the melodic tones and echoing tunes of each song to flow through a room bringing peace and an interesting point of conversation! Amazing...

3rd album still on top form

I just discovered that Karine Polwart has a 3rd album and Fairest Floo'er does not disappoint. Included is a great cover of "The Learig" and from the radio 2 ballad series "can't weld a body" which was one of the series highlights (without any commentry running through it.) Highly recommended listening.

Back to her roots

This is an outstanding collection of traditional songs that takes Karine back to her Malinky days; each one is a gem but "Dowie Dens" and "The Death of Queen Jane" are truely outstanding. I'm not sure why "Can't Weld A Body" was included on this album because it is out of place with the other songs. This is not a criticism of this song, which I feel is probably the finest she has ever written and undoubtedly the best folk song of 2007. I feel it perhaps hsould have been omitted from this album and included in "This Earthly Spell".

Biography

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '90s, '00s

From Banknock in Stirlingshire, Scotland, Karine Polwart was a late developer in musical terms; she was nearly 30 before she became a professional, nervously launching a career initially built on traditional Scots music, for which she showed such natural aptitude. She also began putting her faith in her own songs and later remodeled herself as a singer/songwriter. Many of the songs she subsequently wrote were drawn from her experiences as a social worker specializing in domestic and child abuse cases...
