It's good and no mistake

Just bought this album after hearing them live a few times. It's great in the same way fairground attraction was in the 80's, and probably some other bands are today. Polly is a bit like Beth Ditto, only 97.6 times more attractive, and her voice is much better. The rest of the band that I assume makes up the Billets Doux bit are like the Beatles, only less famous. I assume they don't have scouse accents either, so on reflection the comparison with the fab 4 is I admit, somewhat flawed. Still, they seem to play their musical instruments well enough, which is good given they're in a band. The guitarist has more hair than a poodle, which must play havoc with his vision when playing, I'd cut it off, carrying the John Peel circa 1974 look doesn't really work for me, or for many other people in 2009 I'd imagine. Anyway, give Polly and her hairy love letters a pop, you won't be dissapointed. Unless you like grunge metal or something, in which case I'd recommned Alice in Chains album 'dirt' (1992).

The truth is, this is an excellent debut.

This supremely talented band (born out of the ashes of bizarrely overlooked rockers The Bully Cats) has been the UK's best-kept secret for too long. The album captures the live spirit of a band going places, and showcasing their breadth of styles. While some might observe the band's genre-hopping as a lack of focus, it demonstrates a band embracing a spirit of adventure, willing to take the bits from music's past as they see fit. Equally at home firing out Sun-era rock as well as smooth smoky jazz, there's always the feeling that Polly & The Billets Doux are a band simply having fun engaging in the art of tuneful songwriting. Sharp lyrics, feelgood melodies, sublime vocals and measured guitar licks, there isn't a single weak link - and live the whole thing works even better. Come back to the album after the live set, and it serves as a glorious momento to the energy of this versatile four piece. Standouts include lead track Follow My Feet, Lead Me On, Charmed, I Would Ask and Don't Trouble Trouble. Catch them now before they get huge!

An amazing album from an amazing band...

I absolutely adore this release - it's absolutely spectacular from beginning to end and definitely one of my favourite albums of the past few years. PATBD are really doing something different with their music. They don't appear to be influenced by trends and fads, they just make entertaining, high-quality and beautiful songs in the genre area of alt-country/soul. BRILLIANT ALBUM!
