Album Review

In the age of instant success, Nerina Pallot was a singer/songwriter who didn't quite fit, failing to chart at all with her first two albums, Dear Frustrated Superstar and Fires. It wasn't until Fires was reissued that it finally broke through, and even then it didn't quite reach the Top 20. She had the fire and anger of Alanis Morissette along with the melodic qualities and thoughtfulness of Joni Mitchell, as shown on the opening track, "Everybody's Gone to War," an updated protest song (after all, wars were still going on in various places all over the world). Here was a set of 11 real songs, all written by Pallot and sung with feeling, backed by either acoustic guitar or piano. The influence of Mitchell could be heard most clearly on "Sophia," the second single to be released, a simple melody with Pallot's voice soaring unexpectedly up and down the scales over piano accompaniment. But by way of complete contrast, "All Good People" and "Heart Attack" were full-on rock tracks.

Even better than the original...

Nerina Pallot's re-issued and re-mastered album 'Fires' takes the first version of the album and, through some subtle re-records and re-mixes, offers a stunning collection of songs that surpasses the original. Special mention must go to the new version of 'Idaho' with its new and gloriously dramatic string accompaniment! Even if you own the original 'Fires', this new version is well worth investing in. In short, this is fabulous!

Can't stop listening to it...

I purchased the original version of 'fires' last april, and I absoulutley loved it, then my computer crashed, and I lost it all, so I bought the CD, obviously it was again amazing. Then I heard Nerina had been given a new recording contract, and she was to be '2006's answer to James Blunt' (hopefully less annoyng mind you) On Monday I rushed out to buy it, not expecting much difference to be honest, and then you get too track 4 (Idaho) Stunning, the new string arangement on this track alone is worth buying the album, let alone the other masterpieces, such as Geek Love, Mr King and Sophia. All in all 'Fires' is the best album I have heard in a long time, it's a grower, the more you play it, the more you will love it. Buy it now!

Masterful

What an absolute gem. This young lady manages to blend the best of the likes of, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, Katie Melua and soaring lyrical tones of Annie Lennox. On top of all this, it's her own work! Did I find any stand out tracks ? Yes. All of them. Don't Just sit there. Buy the album, you will not be disappointed. I guarentee this will become a classic album. Don't miss out.
