iTunes Review
Those into the minimal melancholy of 2008's Rising Down are in for more moody masterpieces with 2010's How I Got Over. The Roots' ninth studio album touches on more dark and heady subjects like loneliness, perseverance, self-abuse, war, and even aspects of existentialism. "Dear God 2.0" is riveting and beautiful with haunting elements provided by Monsters of Folk. Blu, P.O.R.N. and Dice Raw contribute to "Radio Daze", which is a little more buoyant thanks to some roomy, snare-heavy beats and a melodic hook in the chorus while Black Thought's ability to make complex phrasing move with a flowing cadence takes center stage. Things get a bit sunnier on "Now or Never" as both the tempos and melodies pick up a little. But you get a sense of why "How I Got Over" became the title-track from the first verse. It's overflowing with the classic tones of Philly soul, and not just in the instruments — Black Thought's heartfelt and controlled singing here reveals his best performance of the album, though he's upstaged by Joanna Newsom on the contagiously catchy "Right On".
Customer Reviews
Slow in places, but will no doubt be a grower.
Brandon's solo effort is not bad. I don't believe he fully deserves five stars just because he's a brilliant entertainer when fronting The Killers, but he does deserve a huge amount of credit for releasing a solo album of decent duration and which consists of some very good songs. 'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas' is a great opener and could easily open most or all of his live sets that he's playing next month. It's a fitting tribute to his homeland. 'Jilted Lovers and Broken Hearts' is bound to be Brandon's second single release. It's a very up-beat track which is very reminiscent of the days of 'Sam's Town'. After listening to the album numerous times, it is easy to see why 'Crossfire' was the first single to be released. This is because it is BY FAR the best song on the album. My only negative comments are that the album is very slow and very personal and doesn't feature many 'Hot Fuss' and 'Sam's Town'-esque tracks. I know artists like to develop and define their sound by experimenting, but Brandon seems to be pushing further and further away from the indie rock and roll of the first two Killers albums and more towards ballads. This was seen at times with 'Day and Age'. Of course artists need to change in order to remain exciting, but unfortunately I don't believe this is a good thing for the Killers man.
Songwriting genius
Terrific album from Mr Flowers. If you don't fancy buying the album but want to check out a few tracks, definitely download Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts which is the stand-out track in this album in my opinion!
Does not disappoint a Killers fan!!!
Being a big big Killers fan and seeing them live twice last year I was so looking forward to Brandon's first solo album. Then I heard the fantastic "Crossfire" some months ago and I thought hello this could be something special and when I finally got my hands on the CD I put it on and skipped the tracks and thought "oh - that's not right" and I felt a bit flat. Admittedly I was pushed for time and so I didn't give it a proper listening to - until today and then it all became clear, this is a very very good debut solo album indeed and the distinctive Killers style is certainly there especially in tracks like "Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts" a definite top traack on the album. The track "Only The Young" is another superb track with plenty of tempo and a real beat that grip you into wanting more. Without doubt "Crossfire" is the stand-out track and is a superb song and deserves all the success it's already starting to achieve.
So as a Killers fan I'm very happy and glad I gave it the right amount of time and it really will grow on you so give it time if it isn't quite hitting the sweet spot straight away. All in all a well written album, very well produced and very good quality sonically too. Thoroughly thoroughly recommended.
