Falling Down...
I think The Lodger peaked a long time ago and are starting to sound really tired and a little desperate on this latest offering. The beauty of Grown Ups was the energy and raw and chunky pop monsters, a style that matured elegantly on Life is Sweet, but none of this album is anywhere near as strong, either lyrically or melodically. Piling a load of backing vocalists and extra musicians doesn't really help to disguise the fact that there aren't any noteworthy songs on here. Better to burn out than to fade away and all that......

Though the Lodger were formed in 2004, indie pop fans who remember a time before the Strokes will find their chiming, artfully un-artful strummy guitar pop endearingly evocative of the twee pop sound of the 1980s and '90s. Strong echoes of the Wedding Present, the Smiths, Talulah Gosh and their offshoots, and seemingly dozens of others are inescapable in Ben Siddall's urgent up-and-down guitar riffs and his somewhat adenoidal boy-next-door vocals, which themselves sound directly inspired by the Television...
