Album Review

In its earlier incarnation as Juniper, the band that would become known as Bell X1 (then featuring singer Damien Rice) was universally accepted as Ireland's brightest musical prospect. Before their 1998 collapse, they were compared favorably with hometown heroes U2 and the Frames, and with the release of their third and most successful album to date, Flock, the same comparisons have begun to be heard again. With Flock, Bell X1 have stepped out of the shadow of their more illustrious former cohort; for the first time, Rice doesn't have a single writing credit, and the music has taken on more of a unique, identifiable sound from the post-Radiohead rock that typified their first two efforts. Flock opens with a bang, as the energetic pairing of "Reacharound" and single "Flame" clamor for attention with angular art rock riffs and smooth funk rhythms, respectively. That frontman Paul Noonan doubles as the band's studio drummer adds an interesting dimension to Bell X1's compositions, as demonstrated on "Bad Skin Day," where percussion turns the tables and becomes the lead instrument, relegating the soft acoustic guitar sequences to mere accompaniment. Flock's greatest accomplishment, however, is another of its singles. "Rocky Took a Lover," which forced its way onto radio long before it was officially considered as a single, and it's easy to see why: achingly simple in composition, "Rocky" imagines a conversation between a homeless couple: "[She said], 'You're such an a*****e when you're drunk'/He said, 'At least I'm OK in the morning.'" Bell X1 don't fit comfortably into any of the pigeonholes of modern indie rock: more down to earth than Radiohead; more fun-loving than Coldplay; and too sophisticated to be lumped in with Franz Ferdinand. Bell X1 occupy a niche all of their own, and long may it continue.

Customer Reviews

Underexposed Irish outfit release album for the masses.

Bellx1 are a superb band who you should already be in love with. However, you can be forgiven for not having even heard of them before. This album should change all that though. This is in fact Bell x1's 3rd album. Their previous release received critical acclaim but couldn't match that with sales, whilst their debut album never made it out of their native Ireland. This new album 'Flock' is flawless. Instantly accessible and pleasing to the ear 'Flock' get's better with every listen as you discover the lyrical ingenuity and intense musical atmospheres. Album highlights are the single 'Flame', Rocky Took A Lover', 'Bad Skin Day', 'Just Like Mr Benn', and the closing track 'Lamposts'. If you like Snow Patrol, Coldplay,(Hate to have to mention them but in all honesty Bell x1 are the band Coldplay would be if they were good and had an imagination!), Radiohead, or bands of their ilk then you will enjoy this album. Get on the bandwagon now before they're playing huge venues, marrying celebs, and getting sarcastically interviewed by Simon Amstell!!

Bell X1 do it again...

An excellent follow up to the brilliant "Music In Mouth", "Flock" proves that good songwriting is alive and well in Irish Rock. A lot of the songs on Flock sound so completely different to each other you'd wonder if it's the same band sometimes (which is a good thing, I think). The depth and consideration gone into the lyrics and melodies makes for a good half dozen real gems, which on some other albums you'd be lucky to get one. Initial favorites are "Rocky Took a Lover" (about a homeless man in Smithfield, Dublin), "He Said She Said" and the fantastic "Bad Skin Day". A great album for my first iTunes purchase and cant wait to see Bell X1 live next month.

Open top bus parade

This album is fantastic. The quality, wit and beauty of the songs on this and 'music in mouth' deserve much wider recognition. Commercial success isn't the be all and end all etc - but more people should listen to Bell X1 - they are glorious. Bad Skin Day is my favourite, I too want my own open top bus parade. Do yourself a favour and download it.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Dublin, Ireland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Second only to U2 as Ireland's most popular rock band, Bell X1 crafts a tight, melodic pop sound that calls to mind pre-electronic Radiohead and the more sedate side of Coldplay. Having recorded albums with the likes of Nick Seymour (Crowded House) and Roger Birichiam (Elvis Costello), the band is best known for its ability to craft infectious, durable, radio-friendly hooks with strong production values. Although officially formed in Celbridge, County Kildare, in 1999, the group's roots stretch back...
