Sweetness and menace
This has to be the prettiest album ever about abjection and isolation. The single 'Weird girl' is pure paradox, jaunting along blissfully to the darkest of self-punishing lyrics. But there's humour in here too, in the kooky words and their playful delivery: like Morrissey, she uses misery stylishly and ironically, rather than self-indulgently ('laughing myself to death': Bowlface en Provence). Musically these songs are unlike anything else. 'Pop-madrigal-jazz-country' would be too restrictive a category. The production is slick and modern, but acoustic and timeless too, with distantly remembered instruments and motifs popping up unexpectedly. But ultimately it's all about the voice: elegant, effortless, and not a little disturbing.
sublime
Can’t recommend Floreat highly enough. Spell-binding and original, it is beautiful yet unsettling, powerful yet fragile.
Genre-defying, with elements of classical, jazz, pop, r’n’b and ska, and self-penned, arranged and performed (with appearances from the London Philarmonic Orchestra), Floreat is for me a masterpiece and instant classic.
Oozing with the generosity, bravery and love with which it clearly was made, Floreat intrigues and fascinates. It will enchant and ravish you, Carlyle’s effortlessly sublime voice drawing you in, only to release you once you are sure to keep returning to each skillfully-crafted note and every beguiling vocal. At times sweet and upbeat, it is at others dark and hypnotic.
Buy Floreat, buy the album whole, let Mara Carlyle take you on a journey. Let her seduce and mesmerise you, let her envelop you in her sumptuous magic. Let her flourish.

This intricate and clever album is a real gem and deserves so much love having survived against all the odds. If you get a chance to see her live, grab it.
Congratulations to Mara for persevering when all seemed impossible. Here's looking forward to the next one.
