A retro tinged classic

The Bees are one of the most consistent and under-rated bands the UK has produced in the past 10 years, and each of their albums is crafted, slow burning and a perfect accompaniment to a blissed out late summer evening. Free The Bees has at least half a dozen absolute stomers on it, from the almost tear-inducing harmonies on opening track These Are The Ghosts. Wash in the Rain is another grower, and one of those timeless tracks that will gain more fans as time goes on. Horsemen is another beast of a track, while the funky instrumental The Russian adds depth and texture to an already varied album. I Love You is a classic ballard which stays the right side of cheesy, while slow-burn tracks like Hour Glass get under your skin the more you hear them. One small downside of this album is the quirky, fun, but ultimately annoying Chicken Payback. It really doesn't represent what The Bees are about, though I don't begrudge them some pop success. See them live to really see what the fuss is about. Truly a band worth paying attention to. Check out the other albums too - new one Octopus is like a cross between this and the Sunshine Hit Me debut.

I bought it before the advert!

This album has a definite 60’s flavour, with bright percussion, close harmonies and a Gibson guitar sound, but it still has a modern guitar pop character almost Blur like. “The Chicken Payback” is a brilliant nonsense song which I think has been used on the Deo advert with the baboons watching football. I also really like “Wash in the Rain” and “These are the Ghosts”. At the moment these 2 are amongst my highest play counts, so they don't "wear out" after you've heard them a few times.
