Customer Reviews
Ah - innocent times!
From what I gather from some old sleeve notes the recording of this was not a very happy process (the usual 'difficult second album' story). And to be fair it is a bit uneven. But all credit to them for pushing ahead with their muse despite all the bad press they were getting at the time. If you think about it (although perhaps only if you were around at the time), what could have been more rebellious than attempting a single-handed prog-rock revival in the mid-1980s? Jigsaw I think sums up the odd Marillion paradox quite nicely. Gloriously flowery lyrics and in-your-face anthemic music (and a vague and very distant memory of Fish in full make-up holding up a giant reflective jigsaw piece to bounce a spotlight around the old Hammersmith Odeon during the guitar solo). Easy to see why the critics in that age of cynicism had some issues. And yet behind all the pomp and circumstance there's something rather special that seems to hold its own after all these years: a strange, slightly ambiguous, melancholic ballad about two lovers who keep arguing all the time but can't split up, with the whole feeling of uncertain introspection perfectly nailed by the opening and closing keyboard lines. They certainly had moments when they were up there with the best.
Wicked Nostalgia
Like almost everyone else - this takes me right back to school days! I'm 40 now and remember hand painting the Marillion logo on the covers of exercise books and on the sleeves of TDK C90 cassettes after copying it and playing on my Sony Walkman 'till the batteries wore out!! I was a big Gabriel fan at the time and its easy to see the distinct similarity now - got the first few Marillion albums on Vinyl...all stashed somewhere in my parents attic ...haven't listened in years...but will now! I hope not all these old albums get tarnished by poor 'remastering', a contradiction in terms - the vinyl sounded richer in my opinion..some tracks have such a tinny feel? These are my musical routes which led me to explore Dylan, Cohen, Waits.... with all their depth of Lyrics - Old Derek Dick had great potential really but lacked staying power and the creative hunger seemed to fizzle away. Script for a Jesters Tear, Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood are almost a trilogy and are each brilliant pieces of work. What followed are in my opinion best forgotten which is probably why I gave up on Marillion 20 odd years ago...just as I did Genesis once Phil bullied his sound into everything they did.
Meeting an old friend
I've not listened to this album in probably 16 years. I had it on vinyl but never got it on CD after my record deck died. I've just bought it and listened to it and it's like meeting an old friend you've not seen in years. This is still my favourite Marillion album. The sheer absurdity of it all has brought a smile that will last for days. Fish was and is a genius.
