Album Review
The original soundtrack to Ridley Scott's Gladiator features an original score composed by Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer and Golden Globe nominee and former Dead Can Dance member Lisa Gerrard. The duo's dramatic music incorporates traditional orchestral elements, ancient and indigenous instruments, and Gerrard's haunting vocals to create a timeless and evocative backdrop for Scott's tale of an avenging gladiator in ancient Rome.

Strength And Honour
Being a professional composer myself, friends often ask me, "What do you listen to?" However, because they know what my job is, I suspect what they are really asking is, "Is there anything out there that you particularly rate?" I invariably tell them that what I listen to is film music because, at its finest, this is demonstrably the best music being written today. Composers are like everyone else: they go where the money is - a practice that has been going on for hundreds of years, from Court players entertaining ancient monarchs to the likes of Bach, Mozart and Handel writing for their respective patrons. These days not much has changed - only now the talent has gone to Hollywood which, after all, is The Mother Of All Patrons. And Hans Zimmer today, I think, stands alone amongst composers plying their trade in Tinseltown. The score for Gladiator is, in my opinion, his best work to date. Renowned already for writing terrific action sequences, it seems as if all that he has been doing up to now has led to this project. There is indeed a lot of action here, but there are also unforgettable, heartbreaking little melodies scattered throughout - sometimes hidden amongst grander arrangements, but often given their own breathing space and played on nothing more than a soft wind instrument. The collaboration with Lisa Gerrard, Klaus Badelt and others also adds flavour throughout, whilst there is much here for students to appreciate, including the use of unusual musical 'modes' and the many, clever allusions to great works and composers of the past: watch out for marvellous - stolen! - Wagnerian moments in the track "The Might Of Rome". The old boy would have been proud. So, get your hands on this record; and if anyone asks you, "Is there anything out there that you particularly rate?" you'll have a simple answer for them.
Shadows and Dust
A truly amazing album that I listened to throughout my early teenage life. The album allows you to experience such raw emotions ranging from aggression (The Battle, Barbarian Horde) to contrasting earthly, beautiful tracks (Elysium, Now We Are Free) personifying the natural world. This soundtrack takes you on a journey, which begins in the shadows and ends in emotive bright light. For me the uniqueness of this work is its ability to relate and united the emotions of people throughout history. It has opened my mind to the fact that regardless of battles, wars, civilisations coming and going, we are all people that have to live together and will all eventually go to our own Elysium’s.
Amazing, Now we are free
"Now we are free" is just amazing, unbelievable. It seems to have this slow pace yet a fast pace at the same time, it can feel happy, sad, or exciting and indeed all three at the same time depending on how you listen to it. Overall an amazing song and an amazing album overall, I very highly recomend it.
