Glue - album review
Great tunes here...a wonderful album and the thread runs right through from first to last. Folky, bluesy, country-y. There are a few different emotions and sounds here, like Summer and Kids - slower ballads - to the more kicking Sea Shanty and Sunshine Sunshine. Desire aches in every sense of the word, Red Sky & Spanish Coast tells a beautiful story. They all seem to be about friends, girlfriends, highs, lows; a real collection of life's experiences. The melodies tell it like it is; sad minors to happy majors, to cheeky sevenths. It fits like a glove. I really like the couple of piano interludes that are thrown in between songs; they give the whole thing a certain humanity, a moment to breathe between the intensity of what's being expressed. I've heard a lot of stuff from this guy and this is the most mature yet. Every time I listen another layer comes out, and yet the songs are essentially wonderfully simple country/blues songs. His voice is unique...an uncompromising, yearning, modern day crooning. Wonderful stuff.
This album deserves more listeners!
If you’re a fan of singer-songwriters (e.g. Damien Rice/ Josh Ritter/ Tom McRae/ Tom Baxter etc), you’ll probably like this excellent debut. Touching songs performed with genuine emotion. I am a music fan with over 13,000 songs in my iTunes, so I like to think that I have pretty eclectic taste. This is one of the very few albums that I’ve given every track 5 stars. There isn’t a bad song on the album. Summer and Desire are particular favourites of mine.
