iTunes Review
With a professional alt-country backing group behind him, credited as the Pariah Dogs, Ray LaMontagne might be expected to rock it out a bit more on his fourth studio album, 2010’s God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise. And for a few cuts -- “Repo Man,” “Devil’s In the Jukebox — drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Jennifer Condos lead LaMontagne to huskier, friskier terrain. But the introspective singer-songwriter doesn’t like to settle with too much commotion. Greg Leisz steps up on pedal steel for the world-weary “New York City’s Killing Me” and you can imagine the skidmarks in the road as LaMontagne floors it back to his country home. He’s at his best when his voice is given the most room to breathe. The old-time country melody behind “Old Before Your Time”, the whispered desperation behind the exquisite “Like Rock & Roll and Radio” and the somber finality of “This Love Is Over” make LaMontagne a broken soul singer who’s got Jesse Winchester and Van Morrison on his mind. With so many fine albums to his name, it’s difficult to declare any album his best, but LaMontagne’s holding his own, if not getting better all the time.

Ray LaMontagne
In a recent interview with the LAC, Ray stated that his "songs reveal themselves, but only in the briefest of suggestion, like an old-time burlesque—a hint of a calf, a flash of thigh. The imagination has to do the rest. The real beauty in a song—or a recording of a song—is in the imperfection, the humanness."
'God Willin'' is LaMontagne's first time trying his hand at producing, and in comparison to 2008s arguably over-produced 'Gossip in the Grain,' it's hit perfection on the 'low-fi album' radar.
Breathtaking, heartfelt, rememberable. Get it and love it.
In fine voice as always...
Its great to hear some new Ray tunes, at last...voice is awesome as always..roaring away, should be the soundtrack to the autumn thats fast approaching...best singer out there by a mile...soulful, catchy..bit more upbeat than his last album(s), on first listens it seems very good...
Love It!
Oh what an amazing album. Love Ray's music, Gossip in the grain didn't really hit the spot for me, a few good songs on it but this really hits the mark. I have this in the car and on those long jounreys it keeps me happy. Listened to it driving in the country to Oban, was amazing, time passed so quickly and I loved ever minute of the cd. So many good quality songs, fantastic playing by the musicians, just bloody great music, I'll keep going back to this.
