An Easy Listening Joy
Steve Macfarlane has taken five years to follow up his eponomous debut. This CD is well worth the wait. What strikes you on listening to the CD is the confidence and maturity in the delivery which represents a step improvement from the aforementioned debut. Inspired by and using much of local Liverpool poet Peter Grant's material the CD lyrically is with a pathos which is never mawkish or over sentimental.
'Cherry Blossom, opens the CD with a lush orchestral arrangement with echos of David Gates and Nilsson. 'Never the Right Time' is classic 60's style Bacharach and is underpinned with a swinging sassy production that has a nagging melody that lingers in the mind long after you finish listening to it. 'Heart Scare' is a nice understated tune that is well suited to FM Radio.
'All the Tea in China' with its eastern flavour is dramatic and evocative. Credit also must be given to Macfarlane's collaborator Billy Hui who's influence can be found here and throughout the CD.
I would urge anyone who is a fan of the easy listening genre to invest in this very strong collection of songs. You will not be disappointed.
