iTunes Review

Like their previous album, 100th Window, Heligoland expands long and hard on Massive Attack’s pioneering “trip-hop” sound, finding new territory within their sphere of influence with a variety of guests that make Heligoland read like an evening with Hollywood Squares. Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval brings her sleepy, seductive gaze to “Paradise Circus”. Blur’s Damon Albarn brings his soulful side to “Saturday Come Slow”, which also features Portishead’s Adrian Utley on guitar. “Splitting the Atom” grinds through a slow, slinky trudge where the group’s founding members drift near their roots. “Girl I Love You” adds a sinister menace to its bass-heavy groove and explosive electronic apocalypse until the terror sweats lead to a cathartic fade-out. “Psyche” swoops with an elliptical keyboard loop that shifts with the sweet coo of Martina Topley-Bird. “Flat of the Blade” with Elbow’s Guy Garvey lurks like a long-lost Nico track visiting with the Soft Machine’s Robert Wyatt. Heligoland features many textures and quirky atmospheres to make for a warm, modern adventure.

Don't expect another Mezzanine

Massive Attack's fifth album doesn't live up to their previous work, but that doesn't mean its not a satisfying return after their hiatus.

"Pray for Rain" is a strong opener, and it compares favourably with MA's others such as "Safe From Harm" and "Angel". "Paradise Circus" is almost the equivalent of Mezzanine's "Teardop" or "Exchange" - a soothingly beautiful track that represents a change form the mostly dark and depressing sound of the album. As always, Massive Attack are joined by some formiddable guest vocalists. Horace Andy returns on the brilliant "Girl I Love You", Guy Garvey from Elbow has an uncharacterisitc appearance on "Flat of the Blade", and Martina Topley-Bird's imrpove the otherwise unremarkable songs, "Psyche" and "Babel".

Overall, Heligoland is a worthwhile listen that shows the trip-hop pioneers moving into new territory. Those disappointed to see the omission of their recent live tracks will be glad to hear that said material will feature on their next EP.

A triumphant return to form!

After seeing Massive Attack live last year I was underwhelmed by the new material played.
So I was very pleasantly surprised when I heard the new album in its entirety.
The opening track is a cracker, indeed Splitting The Atom is the only one which I'm not a huge fan of.
Paradise Circus is, in my humble opinion, one of the best things they've ever done.
Great stuff!

The pioneering force behind the rise of trip-hop, Massive Attack were among the most innovative and influential groups of their generation; their hypnotic sound — a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples — set the pace for much of the dance music to emerge throughout the 1990s, paving the way for such acclaimed artists as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, and Tricky, himself a Massive Attack alumnus.
