Album Review

Following the flawed Mr. Jordan, Julian Lennon returned to straight-ahead pop with Help Yourself, which recalled the work of his father more than any of his other records. On Help Yourself, Lennon never seemed to be cannibalizing his father's songs; instead, he appeared to be learning from the Beatles, writing songs that were more carefully constructed than his previous work. Most of the record featured strong hooks and melodies, indicative of his songwriting progression, with the gorgeous "Saltwater" as the best evidence of his improved songwriting abilities.

Slowly But Surely

Though by no means one of Julian's best albums, one can see that he's really trying to shine through the many different styles of the producers that he has worked with, that have put their own slant on what Julian 'should' sound like! There are a few very good tracks on this album, but then again, there are a few that clearly do not represent him. I feel he is slowly but surely coming into his own, though it may take time for people to accept him for the true talent that he is. Tracks to listen for are: Saltwater, Get a Life, Maybe I was Wrong, Listen, Other side of Town & Take me Home.

Let Help Yourself Be

Julian Lennon was brought up with a very different perspective on John Lennon than the rest of the world. Somehow, in private, John was an angry, bullying father and Julian, understandably, felt he needed to put the record straight. Still, when making his own record, he drew on the only well he knew. This album is almost embarrasingly Lennony, down to the Strawberry Field-lite schmaltz of 'Saltwater'. John would probably have laughed at it. There is nothing here which has the blistering authenticity of his father's work. If Julian was seriously good, he could work under different name and achieve success. Sadly, he isn't that good. Help yourself and buy some of his dad's work. This is tacky, derivtive and ultimately sort of upsetting.

The son of John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia, Julian Lennon parlayed a remarkable vocal similarity to his father into a moderately successful singing career during the 1980s. John Charles Julian Lennon was born on April 8, 1963, in Liverpool, and as a child, inspired several Beatles compositions: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" reportedly arose out of a drawing Julian made of a classmate, and following his parents' divorce, he became the subject of Paul McCartney's sympathetic "Hey Jude."
