iTunes Review

There's something uniquely British about The Fratellis’ sound — perhaps it’s the soccer-anthem swagger that seems to inflate many of their songs, or maybe it’s the pub-flavored piano and wild, Pogues-style energy running throughout — and it certainly adds to their charm. (There is also an occasional Beatles-esque sound to the vocals of Jon Fratelli, especially when backed by drummer Mince Fratelli.) The opening track, “My Friend John”, opens with galloping bongos (!) that segue into ferocious, spaghetti-western guitars — whose genius idea was that? The song feels like jumping on a young, unbroken pony, and it ends too soon (check out a track by fellow Glaswegians, Sons and Daughters, called “Johnny Cash” for a similar ride). First single, “Mistress Mabel”, along with “A Heady Tale” and the gritty “Tell Me A Lie”, are boisterous and bawdy fun, while “Baby Doll” and “Lupe Brown” celebrate the Merseybeat sound. Album closer “Milk & Honey” is a wonderful surprise, morphing into an all-out rocker half way through, and “Jesus Stole My Baby” is one of the album's strongest tracks.

Top Second Album

I gotta say i got this album with really no hope for it after hearing mistress mabel. Guess what i was wrong , as soon i heard " if you where a shape, what shape ye would ye be?" i new it was goin to be a classic. Best songs; A Heady Tale, Look out sun shine, Baby Doll, Tell me a Lie and acid jazz singer. Top album :) 5/5!

DIFFICULT SECOND ALBUM SUCCESS

This is the blueprint for how every band should approach that "difficult second album". They've managed to maintain their trademark sound whilst moving on musically a lot. Some of the singalong foot-stomping might have gone, but that's not a bad thing. Somehow they seem like a much more serious band. A solid set of songs, Look Out Sunshine and Shameless being the highlights.

Second-Album Syndrome?

No chance. With an album full of brilliant tracks, the Fratellis are back with a follow-up even better than their debut. There are better lyrics and greater maturity, things are looking good for the Fratellis in 2008. Selected "Best Of" - Babydoll, Shameless, A Heady Tale and Stragglers Moon. There are a few growers on this album, but there isn't a weak track in sight. The bonus, Nobody's Favourite Actor could've featured on the official tracklisting and not looked out of place. Well worth the £7.99

Biography

Formed: 2005 in Glasgow, Scotland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

A brashly melodic indie rock outfit from Glasgow, the Fratellis feature vocalist/guitarist Jon Fratelli, drummer Mince Fratelli, and bassist Barry Fratelli. The witty trio played its first show in early 2005, maintaining that the band's moniker was merely an homage to Barry's original surname (however, other rumors suggest that the Fratellis borrowed it from the nemesis family featured in Steven Spielberg's film The Goonies). Such trivia only added to the Fratellis' growing appeal upon their performance...
