Album Review

The National have worn a lot of hats since their 2001 debut, but they’ve never been able to shake the rural, book-smart, quiet violence of the Midwest. The Brooklyn-groomed, Ohio-bred indie rock quintet’s fifth full-length album navigates that lonely dirt road where swagger meets desperation like a seasoned tour guide, and while it may take a few songs to get going, there are treasures to be found for patient passengers. High Violet begins to take shape on “Afraid of Everyone,” a slow-build midtempo rocker, but it’s the punishing “Bloodbuzz Ohio” that serves as the record's centerpiece. Its refrain of “I still owe money to the money, to the money I owe” seems relevant and nostalgic, a highway anthem that feels like the anti-“Born to Run.”

How did I get by without this album?

On a friends recommendation, having never heard of them (I am ashamed to admit) I downloaded High Violet and stuck it on in the background while I was pootling about the house one afternoon. It literally stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and soak it in. It really caught me by surprise. This is a stunningly beautiful album; thoughtful, intelligent sometimes deliberately simple but all the more beguiling and intriguing for it. There is not one duff track but a few stand outs like blood buzz ohio, runaway and terrible love but, honestly, this is album will take your head on a deep, winding, introspective tour. It is melancholy but somehow hopeful and inspiring. I wake up and want to hear this before i've put the coffee on. Do not delay, buy this album. The National will make your life better. Promise.

Music Made by Grown Ups, for Grown Ups

I'm a huge National fan but to be honest on the first few listens I wasn't hugely impressed, except for initial standouts like England & Bloodbuzz. But the more I listened, the more it pulled me in. I've been listening to this solidly for 2 weeks now and every listen I discover something new, a great drum beat, a clever lyric I'd missed or a theme of a song becoming more apparent. Everything else I listen to now just seems shallow, passe and immature by comparison. The National are a phenomenal band, a band who has the ability to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand out. Buy this now but be patient, good things come to those who wait...

perfect

One of my top 10 albums. Great band, great album. Worth also checking out their album 'Boxer'.

Although formed during the post-punk revival of the late '90s, the National took inspiration from a wider set of influences, including country-rock, Americana, indie rock, and Britpop. The lineup began taking shape in Ohio and officially cemented itself in New York, with baritone vocalist Matt Berninger joining forces with two sets of brothers — Scott (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums), and Aaron (guitar) and Bryce Dessner (guitar). After establishing themselves as a live act, the bandmates...
