Your first foray into classical music?
If you feel that classical music is boring, staid, perhaps not for you. I'd suggest downloading Holst's The Planets. You'll surely enjoy this delicate, violent, subtle, brash, simple & yet complex masterpiece. It's one of the most easy pieces of classical music to visualise. You can imagine yourself captive on the various planets of the solar system, and somehow can imagine each planet's landscape that mush more vividly when your thoughts are accompanied, or rather inspired by this music. Give it a try. Hope you enjoy it.
Wow...I'm a rocker through and through but this is a favourite...
It's hard to pick fault in a piece of music like this. Especially Jupiter, which is my favourite part of the piece. This recording captures the majesty of the music, and conveys the power that Holst aimed to put across. A word of advice to anyone who buys this and likes it: If you get the chance to see an orchestra perform it live: take it.
Unspeakable Beauty
A seemless, perfect piece of classical music, exquisite, graceful yet forceful, powerful yet gentle. There is little music created these days that can even hold a candle to the mastery of 'The Planets', it is a true odyssey through emotion, mood and thought - dim the lights, close your eyes and let your mind be swept through the cosmos. If I was forced to choose a favourite then I would opt for Neptune, the Mystic, so saturnine, peaceful, cold and harmonious. Any music collection is the worse off for not possessing this legendary work of Holst.
