iTunes Review
This British indie rock band led by guitarist/singer David Feck explores the age-old connections of garage rock, psych-pop, punk, and post-punk with a literate heart. The guitars distort and scream. The organ pumps like it was recovered from Question Mark & The Mysterians’ “96 Tears”, while the singing is inspired by the deliberate messiness of Nikki Sudden and The Jacobites. Former Orange Juice leader Edwyn Collins and The Cribs’ Ryan Jarman add their insights to an album that salutes the memory of Una Baines (The Fall’s first of many keyboardists) in the dense and captivating “Yoona Baines”, as well as Herbert Huncke (an early influence on the Beat Generation) in the appropriately named and expletive-heavy “Herbert Huncke, Pt. 2.” Feck deals like Lou Reed on the rambling “Some of Us Don’t Want to Be Saved”. There’s a real rescued-from-the-gutter feel to tunes such as “In a Lonely Place”, “She Had Daydreams”, and “A Memorial for Nobody I Know”. It’s touching, bittersweet, and close to the streets.
Customer Reviews
One of 2011s Finest Albums!
Comet Gain have been around a while now, this is their latest LP, released through the marvellous Fortuna Pop! label. If you like yr indie vital, passionate and intelligent than you'll love Howl Of The Lonely Crowd. A pleasing mixture of Orange Juice, The Jam, The Cribs, The Fall, a dash of Northern Soul and the thornier side to the C86 scene; Comet Gain are a classic indiepop/indierock band. Forget whatever NME is fawning over this week and buy this amazing album, or indeed any Comet Gain album. Brilliant!
