M to the A to the P to the S *****

This album is an electronic masterpiece, 12 achingly melancholic / uplifting tracks fit well as a coherent whole, plus the bonus "From here's to bliss" 1 of the most ecstatically joyous tunes you'll encounter this year - I defy you not to plaster a grin on your face to this one.

Layered textures of standout opening title track, current single "Dream of Crystal", "Valium in the Sunshine", "Everything is Shattering" "Chemeleon", end track "Without You" and (current personal fave) "The Note" reward you with repeated listening, yielding further complexity / neances of sound.
There's fragility to songs here, vocals emotive yet controlled throughout the mostly introspective subject matter, which (to me) details a journey from darkness, stepping back from the abyss and "turning the mind" towards positivity. But what the hell do I know :) Crucially there's a muscularity to tracks also - typically punchy rythyms & warm sounds - James clearly wrung the soul from his kit, if its all about the noises, then theres not a noise out of place here. Add a number of darkly menacing bouncy monsters along the journey, previous single "Let Go Of the Fear", "Papercuts", "Nothing", "Love will Come" and "Die Happy, Die Smiling" all soar from spare minimal openings to beat propelled soundscapes.
So you know what do do. Start pressing keys and clicking buttons and buy this album. A magnificent return from the MAPS magician.

hmmmmm

i LOVED the debut album, but i've listened to this several times now, and to be honest it leaves me feeling empty, and disappointed...... there are no great melodies or stand out tracks like last time round, and the tracks aiming for the dancefloor "let go of the fear" seem half hearted ... a poor second album, hope they re-disover old magic next time round

New Maps

“We Can Create” was always going to be a hard act to follow and for those Maps fans who were expecting “Turning the Mind” to be son-of “We Can Create” the new album will be a surprise. But a surprise for the better!!
Gone is the soft-edge dreamy shoegaze and in comes a harder synth-driven energy that moves from bleakness to bliss, from stomp to elegy – all in unmistakable Maps style. This collection takes you on an unforgettable journey. An even harder act to follow. AWESOME!!

Chapman has released a few EPs, including Start Something via Last Space Recordings in 2006, and is assisted by a full band when playing live. Released by Mute in mid-2007, Maps' debut full-length album, We Can...
