A Lost Classic?
Given that the retro reviews of this seminal album have been nothing but positive, it may seem odd to call it a lost classic. BUT this album is much much better. It is one off the most original,moving, etheral and trippy records of all time.A total one-off, which Crosby never tried to replicate again. Or maybe he was unable to.If you ain't heard it, you really, really don't know what you are missing An utterly superb collection of tunes. Music Is Love? Not 'arf.
Stunning
Really, really nice. Manages to be folky without being dull, hippy without being unfocussed. Love the arrangements and the voices. All for a fiver. If you like this, buy Gene Clark's White Light too.
Richard Williams eat yer owld heart out
A fine writer on popular music, the great Richard Williams was so teed off at "Almost Cut My Hair" on Deja Vu that he ripped into this blissful, beautiful album and panned it in the Melody Maker when it camne out in 1970. An error which I hope he has resolved in his own mind. This is, in fact, one of the absolutely finest, most wonderfully realised examples of West Coast roack, a genre which all-too-frequently tended towards pot-filled jams of interminable boredom. On this album the whole squad - Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor - is on the most fantastic form. Crosby's idiosyncratic songs (the selfsame hippy groove that got the Byrds scared enough to sack him a few short years before) are set in a context of quite irresistible playing/harmonising.Since I first heard this album 40 goddamned years ago it has regularly been played chez moi... vinyl, cassette, tape, CD, mp3... Turn up the speakers, roll a spliff and head off for Mount Tamalpais... Sheer genius!!!
