iTunes Review

22-year old Martha’s Vineyard troubadour Willy Mason crafts a second album that continues the young wunderkind’s development as one of his generation’s most exciting songwriters. (His debut, Where the Humans Eat, recorded when Mason was just 19, is mature beyond its years.) Here, Rosanne Cash and his mom add harmonies, and his local friends bring cello and other natural sweeteners. But while the additional ingredients spice things up considerably, it’s Mason’s own likable dustbowl drawl that centers the endeavor. He sings somewhere halfway between Bob Dylan, Jonathan Richman and Beck, with a lazy and breezy indifference that’s at odds with his emotionally restless lyrical concerns. “Gotta Keep Walking” uses the leisurely pace of mid-tempo Ron Sexsmith to cloak its shuffling concerns. “The World That I Wanted” and “We Can Be Strong” sway with bright arrangements that offer optimism where fate attempts to trap the young bard. The horns that punctuate and the strings that saw through “Simple Town” reflect an underlying ambition that hint at Mason’s growing complexity as a writer and observer of life and music.

Simple and superb

There's a refreshingly simple honesty to young folk singer Willy Mason, a heartwarming sincerity that the Blunts and Morrisons of this world could never hope to match. This is evident from the first track "Gotta Keep Walking" and the first single from the album "Save Myself." On first listen of his new album it's clear that it is great both musically and lyrically. It sees him in perhaps a more downbeat and cynical mood than on his debut "Where the Human's Eat" particularly on songs like Simple Town, which have a beautiful eeriness that was absent on that album. However such a mood can get a bit tiresome and the album sags a little towards the end, perhaps lacking the jauntier, more upbeat tracks (So Long springs to mind) of his debut. Still a superb second album and if this talented artist can manage to combine the best parts of this and his first release he will have an absloute classic on his hands.

Worth Buying

Another New Willy Mason Album and another very good album. Though not as good as the debut album, still very much an album full of catchy songs. "We Can Be Strong" a personal favourite.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

With a sound that recalls Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash along with the cynicism of grunge and punk, nobody could believe wry singer/songwriter Willy Mason was only 19 when he appeared on the indie scene. Born and raised on Martha's Vineyard, Mason grew up with his parents' love of folk music. He loved it, too, but his teen years brought Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine into his life. Mason found their political and social messages much easier to identify with and soon combined folk's softer and loose...
