Come on Ryan "fans"
Firstly, i am a huge Ryan Adams fan and a huge fan of his cardinals work. I've been all over the world to watch him live and think he is easily the most talented and prolific song writer of our generation.
However, this is not good.
20 tracks (excluding the iTunes bonus, which is good in fairness), and the vast majority are poor. Anyone who thinks this is acceptable Ry fare has not heard Cold Roses, Cardinology, Heartbreaker, Gold and the rest. The song structures are simple, it's over produced, the rocky style doesn't suit the band at all and it's lyrically weak despite the obvious tongue-in-cheek nature of a lot of it.
Yes, i appreciate this is a collection of tracks that didn't make it onto the other Cardinals releases but it has none-the-less been released as a serious commercial entity and frankly i think it damages Ryan's credibility as an artist.
Sadly, i think it might be time to go back to the record label...I'm off to listen to Heartbreaker as if let down by someone very close to me.
Ryan Magic
Don't listen to the purists about Heartbreaker etc this is good fun turn it up and enjoy
Not great, Ryan
It's painful to think the same person who wrote 'Come Pick Me Up' also wrote 'Typecast' and the other songs on this album. I'm resigned to the possibility that Ryan won't write anything like Heartbreaker again but something on the level of Gold or 29 might be possible. He's still young enough. But this collection of songs is staggeringly poor and the Cardinals aren't helping much - Ryan needs a band to challenge him and tell him when it isn't working, not one that simply indulges him. I hope he finds whatever it is he's lost. There are good reasons why people still go on about Heartbreaker and it was so good that you can almost forgive Ryan for throwaway stuff like this and Rock n Roll. It's just sad because there was a time when, genuinely, he could have become the best.
