Album Review

Dream Theater's first album with new vocalist James LaBrie is an excellent mix of progressive metal stylings with heartfelt vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. Guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy, all of whom trained at Berklee, show impressive ability on their respective instruments. Kevin Moore's keyboards weave strongly through the intricately constructed songs, while operatically trained LaBrie shows an impressive range with his tenor. Standout tracks include the complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1," the Shakespeare-influenced "Pull Me Under" (also released as a single and video), the dramatic "Take the Time," and the 11-minute, thoughtful "Learning to Live." Dream Theater's musicianship and songwriting are a cut above the norm; this is a very good disc.

Dream Theater

Following the relative success of debut When Dream and Day Unite, the band knew that things could only go up. And they did. They bought in current singer James LaBrie, and I have to say throughout his 17 year stint as a full time member, this is his finest hour. Nothing but raw emotion.

This album has to go down as a classic, not just a DT classic, but as a genre, this album broke all the boundaries and opened the door to a whole new unexplored world.

Filled with odd time signatures, epic tracks and jaw dropping virtuosism from all members of the band, this is one of my true favourite albums ever.

Pull Me Under- Every fan of this band knows this song is and always will be a classic- 10/10
Another Day- The perfect balled. Slow, yet building up for a dramatic finish- 10/10
Take the Time- A very cool track. A definite funk style to it. Another DT classic. 10/10
Surrounded- Not my favourite of the album, but a killer solo from JP.-8.5/10
Metropolis- Another DT classic, time changes galore on this track.- 10/10
Under a Glass Moon- A grower. The heaviest track off the album. Sublime guitar solo.-10/10
Wait for Sleep. A mellow son, filled with piano and strings. Least favourite off album.- 8/10
Learning to Live. One of my all time favourite DT songs. Filled with different musical styles, emotional lyrics and yet more odd time signatures. Best of the album!- 10/10

This is the album metal bands WISH they could make

I don't think i can say anything that the other two reviews haven't apart from i couldn't agree more that not only is this DT's best album, and that's saying alot considering i love every song on every album [aside from Falling & WDADU], but also one of the best metal albums.

Pure progressive perfection! :]

11/10

Amazing

This album just blows me away. Every track is a classic. I can't choose a favourite because they're all so good. One of the greatest albums ever made.
