Album Review

Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson writes songs that just feel good. The simple equation that combines him with an acoustic guitar is warm and relaxed, a cozy formula that's made him a favorite among American college crowds. It should be to no surprise that Johnson sticks with what he does best for his third album, In Between Dreams. Producer Mario Caldato, Jr. is back again, touching up Johnson's summery backdrop for another playful set of songs. The genre-blending charm and sweetness that made Brushfire Fairytales and On and On doesn't change that much, but does it really have to? Johnson, alongside drummer Adam Topol and bassist Merlo Podlewski, makes safe records. While there isn't anything wrong with that, taking a few more risks sonically and lyrically wouldn't work against him. Tender moments such as "If I Could" and "No Other Way" showcase a more reserved side on In Between Dreams. Other highlights include the lullaby-like "Breakdown" and the bossa nova rhythms of "Do You Remember." Whether he's singing about being in love — which he does quite well on "Better Together" and "Banana Pancakes" — or reflecting on its hardships, Johnson's laid-back approach is his biggest strength. I felt like I had discovered something amazing when I stumbled on this albumn a few months ago (isn't iTunes great!). This guy just says everything about what music should be... laid back, tuneful, lyrically intelligent and clever. I have since bought it 3 times as a gift and always got a similar reaction. Well done Jack. I wish I was as cool as you!

Beautiful

I was introduced to Jack Johnson whilst I was working in Greece over the summer. Having heard him out there, buying this album was the first thing I did on returning to the UK. It's fantastic. Picks me up from any mood and brilliant to listen to over breakfast before the hustle starts during the day. The only downside is having "Constallations" twice on the album. Personnally I can't tell the difference between the two, so it does become a little boring to listen to the song twice. This is a great album!

Summer music!

I can't actually take this album off repeat at the minute! I've got a 2 hour bus journey up to uni every Tuesday & Thursday, so I listen to the whole thing at least 4 times a week. Such chilled out music, JJ is a genious! This'll most definatly be on play over the summer!!!! Oh, and anyone just starting out playing the guitar, I'd start with Sitting, Waiting, Wishing or Banana Pancakes. Really catchy chord progressions! Enjoy!!!!!
