Jim Moray is brilliant. please buy this CD

We listen to and love a wide range of music; Beatles, Dylan, Beth Orton, Morrison, Unthanks, Bellowhead, Neil Young, Joan as Police Woman, all the Mowtown stuff to name just a few. We love this guy's stuff. Jim Moray is a star in the very bright British folk scene and deserves a wide audience. Try track 6 as a starter - and check out the previous CDs. Cheers

Inspiring, beautiful and simple! Go on, take a chance!

I discovered Jim Moray quite late, in fact only just a year ago, and since then have acquired his first three albums "Jim Moray", "Sweet England" and "Low Culture". Those first three are simply brilliant, but with "In Modern History", Jim has upped the level somewhat and produced a fantastic fourth album of his take on some traditional folk songs, plus some of his own compilations!

I've got no hestitation in declaring that this is Jim's best album to date and that's why I give it 5 stars (though it should have 10)!

There are hints of familiar sounds on this album - I defy anyone to say that "William Taylor" is very Zeppelin-esque (particularly the percussion) and "Bristol Harbour" even has faint smatterings of Tears for Fears in the guitar solo! That aside, Jim's "modern" approach to the "traditional folk song" is inspired and heartwarming. The songs all tell a story - and "Lowlands of Holland" is just beautiful, and the use of the Musicians of Opera North adds a brilliant dimension to these and "Silver Dagger".

I've seen Jim performing live once, but already have two performances lined up for the autumn, with the possibility of some others dotted around! And I can't wait to hear some of these tracks performed live!

Go on - give the album a try - you will not be disappointed! Then follow it up with his first three albums!

Cheers!

Amazing!

Although most of jim's albums are haunting (check out the nightvisiting single and Three Black Feathers) this seems a very posh professional sound from previous albums. I personally liked Low Culture album, but this one seems a bit of a return to folk with jim tending to like ghost romantic love/murder story songs and sailor dittys. I think i liked low culture because he stretched the boat out a bit so to speak doing new things with music (like lucy wan for example). Still if you're a fan its kind of comforting, definatly worth a listen for a newbie and stepping stone to check out everything else to do with Jim.

Biography

Born: Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s

Few Brit folk artists have caused such a stir as Jim Moray. His debut album, 2003's Sweet England, polarized opinion in dramatic fashion. Old traditionalists were dismissive of the computer-generated sounds employed on his daringly adventurous arrangements of old ballads featuring beats and tape loops, influenced as much by Massive Attack and Radiohead as the old trad singers. More, however, saw it as the most innovative and exciting development for British folk music in years, and at least one reviewer...
