Album Review

In Sides isn't Orbital's best album, or their most accomplished, but it is the most definitive. It pulses with the energy of the debut, the lush flow of the second, and the conceptual theme of Snivilisation. The focus this time, though, is ecology. "The Girl With the Sun in Her Head" was recorded on a Greenpeace bus using only solar power, and "Dwr Budr" (Welsh for "dirty water") also criticizes the misuse of natural resources. Phil and Paul's respect for the jungle/drum'n'bass movement showed in the moderate breakbeat rhythms on several tracks. [One of the American releases of In Sides added a bonus disc including "The Saint" single.]

From birth, life death and beyond.. one of the most overlooked pieces of work in music

I believe this album to be the gem in the whole collection; and I am not sure if the concept is supposed to be from the 1st heart beats of life through to its conclusion and beyond, but that certainly how it feels. The opening track creeps with that mentioned heartbeat) in and then develops into 3-4 beautiful melodies just bouncing from each other (if you are lucky to have studio quality monitors and true stereo separation.. check out the engineering job, spectacular). Each track after just follows suit and rolls from one to another; 'Adnan's' has the feels that something is coming, mystery and then half way through a melody that is like a beautiful relief. The Box is a true classic, and is as immense as it is unique, but the true and unsung classic I believe to be 'out their somewhere' part 2 some of the most outstanding work in electro. In Summary.. i was astounded not to see any comments on this album, and although the whole Orbital experience is one that any musician, music lover or general artist should try .. I do believe that in the process of time this piece of work will come out as one of, if not Orbitals best .. just get a good sound system, turn all the lights off sit back and take this rollercoaster

The iTunes review is wrong

...In my opinion. I reckon this IS Orbital's best album. It's the most coherent, most intimate, and yet most epic in scale.

The rave is strong in this one...

Just awesome stuff. I agree that In Sides isn't their best, but that's only because their previous album, Snivilization was even better. Can't recommend this highly enough, though...

Biography

Formed: 1987 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Orbital became one of the biggest names in techno during the mid-'90s by solving the irreconcilable differences previously inherent in the genre: to stay true to the dance underground and, at the same time, force entry into the rock arena, where an album functions as an artistic statement — not a collection of singles — and a band's prowess is demonstrated by the actual performance of live music. Though Phil and Paul Hartnoll first charted with a single, the 1990 British Top 20 hit "Chime,"...
