iTunes Review

As a band that brilliantly recalls the detached, danceable emotional isolation of Joy Division (earning the group honors as the “British Interpol”), the U.K.’s Editors manage to advance their influences by drawing on hooks and keyboard riffs that allow singer Tom Smith to croon his way into the endless night. Working with producer Mark “Flood” Ellis, who’s put his signature on records by U2 and Nine Inch Nails, Editors manage a deep, engrossing sound that brings the apocalypse to your doorstep. The title track reverberates with a stinging bounce and a dark, gothic vocal attack. “Bricks and Mortar” follows with six minutes of euphoric retro-dance moves. “Papillon” uses a keyboard weave that sets up the hypnotic march to the mountaintop. “You Don’t Know Love” clangs with the same detached emotionalism that gave Joy Division its serrated edge. Editors so naturally rebuild the era of New Order, Depeche Mode and others that there’s room enough for them to capture their own fresh energy.

EDITORS : A success story of reinvention

Having been a fan of their previous work, I was a but anxious as to whether Editors could complete the infamous third studio album to a high standard. After a first listen from beginning to end, I was surprised by absence of their trademark sound of guitar-lead anthems. I thought it was an odd change in direction, but soon likened to their new deep and dreary synth-heavy tunes. The album, overall, is very dark, and like most records by inventive and talented artists, the songs are 'growers' rather than 'instant hits'.

'Papillon', the groups lead single for the album, is the only 'instant hit' as it feels radio-play ready, and the group, I believe, identified that themselves. However the rest of the album moulds around it's lead single, and although very short indeed, it is definitely worth it. Tom Smith's daunting vocals power each track with lyrics that I belive are open to interpretation. Be warned...after a few listens, it is all very infectious.

Hmm, very different and definitely a grower

I didn't know what to make of this when I first heard it. My initial thoughts were, 'what have they done, where are the distinctive guitars?'. However, I absolutely adore it now. It's very cold and stark, but so unlike anything else that is out there at the moment. I applaud them for taking such a brave move, as it could quite easily have alienated their audience.

Just downloaded- from what I've heard it's quite the departure!

To clarify I have only heard one song so far, currently working my way through.

This is a new Editors. These Editors are using the electro drums and a good bit of synth to create as Tom Smith said to be a 'Blade Runner type sound'. I like it. It contrasts well with their previous approach of 'make everything sound sweeping and epic' (which I liked a lot!)
