Album Review

If 2001's Britney was a transitional album, capturing Spears at the point when she wasn't a girl and not yet a woman, its 2003 follow-up, In the Zone, is where she has finally completed that journey and turned into Britney, the Adult Woman. Like her peer Christina Aguilera, Britney equates maturity with transparent sexuality and the pounding sounds of nightclubs, but since she's not as dirty as Xtina, her spin is a little different. Where Christina comes across like a natural-born skank, Britney is the girl next door cutting loose at college, drinking and smoking and dancing and sexing just a little too recklessly, since this is the first time she can indulge herself. And that's what In the Zone is — Britney indulging herself, desperate to prove that she's an adult. She has been freed from her musical parent, Max Martin, who is absent for the first time from a Spears album, choosing instead to play the field and work with a bunch of different collaborators, including Madonna, Moby, the Matrix, Trixster, Roy "Royalty" Hamilton, Bloodshy & Avant, and R. Kelly. Since she's so determined to be a woman, not a girl, she has completely shed the sugarcoated big hooks and sappy love songs that drove her stardom, concentrating on music that glides by on mellow grooves or hits hard with its hip-hop beats. It's all club-ready, but despite some hints of neo-electro and the Neptunes, it doesn't quite sound modern — it sounds like cuts from 1993 or Madonna's Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light. Production-wise, these tracks are not only accomplished but much more varied than any of her previous albums — in particular, Moby's "Early Mornin'" has a sleek feel, Mark Taylor's "Breathe on Me" is alluring, and the Bloodshy & Avant productions, "Showdown" and "Toxic," are irresistible ear candy in what is surely Britney's most ambitious, adventurous album to date.

One of her best albums!

This has to be one of Britney's best albums. She put a lot of imput in this album which shows through her songs. It was one of her most experimental albums at the time as she had freed herself from her bubblegum pop into more sexy, sleek songs with hip-hop beats. My ratings for the songs are :- 1) Me Against the Music- Really catchy, which makes you want to dance along to the beat. 8/10 2) (I Got That) Boom Boom- Incredibly infectious song, with some hip hop beats that sounds very sexy! 8.5/10 3) Showdown- Again another experimental song by Britney, which has a R&B feel, which works brilliantly with her soft, breathy vocals making the song sound flirtatious. 7/10 4) Breathe On Me- One of my favs. This song is increadibly hot with her breathy, seductive vocals and its mesmerising beats. 10/10 5) Early Mornin'- Sounds very chilled out and also written by Brit herself, but it doesn't stand out in this album as a classic. 6/10 6) Toxic- Another fav. No doubt about it that this song is definitely intoxicating with it hard beats and its alluring strings. 10/10 7) Outrageous- Feels very sexy with its R&B/Hip-Hop feel. Very infectious. 9/10 8) Touch of My Hand- Another fav. Apart from it's suggestive lyrics...it's an absolutely beautiful song that Britney wrote, which is due to Britney's soft vocals and it's enchanting melody. 10/10 9) The Hook Up- Has a sexy Hip-Hop feel to it, also written by Britney, but it doesn't stand out of this album. 7/10 10) Shadow- Another fav which was also written by Britney. The song is so beautiful with Britney's vocals and the melody, which both are almost hypnotic. 10/10 11) Brave New Girl- This song written by Spears grew on me, and now I find it really infectious with it's incredibly catchy chorus. 8/10 12) Everytime- This song is her most beautiful and best ballad that she has ever composed and also produced. The melody is so beautiful and Britney's vocals and lyrics are so full of emotion that it brings a tear to your eye. 10/10 13) The Answer- With R&B beats this song is incredibly infectious with Britney's alluring vocals. Brilliant bonus track 9.5/10 14) Don't Hang Up- Has very sweet lyrics written by Spears and also has a melody that's sweet as honey! 9/10 This album is definitely worth it's price and you will not be disappointed!

all grown up

after her first three albums being very pop orientated, this album breaks free from wot britney usually does. it has a more R&B feel. & this album does it with class. it's very sexually driven, which makes it all the more better. my favorite tracks are: showdown, breathe on me, touch of my hand, the answer, shadow & of course toxic!!! well worth it!!! a must buy :)

Deffo her best album!

This album i believe was created wayyy before the time in pop. The album completley varies in genre and every track obviously has had a lot of time spent on writing and producing. This will probably be the best album of her life, which is sad as Circus, which is still a very good album, deffo does not top this.

Biography

Born: 02 December 1981 in McComb, MS

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

More than any other single artist, Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. The blockbuster success of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys certainly paved the way for her own commercial breakthrough, but Spears didn't just become a star — she was a bona fide pop phenomenon. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a media fixture regardless of what she was (or wasn't) doing; among female singers of the era (many of whom followed in her footsteps),...
