His best album by far

Hopkins's first two albums showed promise but were ultimately way to safe and lacking in spark. With Insides he realises his potential - no wonder it is by far his most successful album to date. I felt moved to write this review after reading some bizarre criticisms on here talking of him "succumbing to glitch" - this is not a glitch release in any sense. It has some dark moments, some spiky rhythms and some serious bass for sure (the title track Insides and Colour Eye are the most extreme examples), but in a way that is far more indicative of a dubstep influence than the tricksiness that accompanies pure glitch. This is all about the melody and groove, not showing off programming techniques.

That's not to say it doesn't have calmer moments - the second half contains many of his most tranquil works. Small Memory and Autumn Hill display an unequalled pianistic sensitivity, A Drifting Up hypnotises with blissful, evolving chords, and Light Through The Veins (his best known track since its appearance opening the last Coldplay album) is classic electronica at its most euphoric.

It's something FAR deeper and richer than a "chill out" album - if that's what you're looking for, buy some Helios or Ulrich Schnauss, or indeed one of Hopkins's first two albums. This is for fans of Gold Panda, Four Tet, Nosaj Thing, the more melodic side of Plaid, Seefeel, etc.

Wonderful

One of the best in the genre, glitch and edge - especially the breakdown on the track "Insides"

Disappointed

I have been a fan of Jon Hopkins for a number of years but was quite disappointed by this album. My personal view is that it is awkward and messy - far removed from his previous, rather lush releases. I'm afraid to say that I didn't even get to the end of the album as it irritated me so much, and removed it from my ipod straight away. I might have well thrown my six quid into the sea. This album doesn't even come close to the likes of talent such as Secede; Helios; Kettel; Tycho etc etc etc...
