Album Review
Blackheart, the duo of Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington, return with the follow-up to their acclaimed debut album Indigo. No sophomore slump for this pair, Invisible is, if anything, an even stronger set. The entire album has a lovely understated simplicity about it, belied by the symphonic arrangements of many of the songs. Like a spring breeze gusting through an airy room, there's a warmth and lightness to the sound that creates the delicate moods that define the group's oeuvre. But Blackheart bear no relationship to the likes of the Cocteau Twins, although Mostyn's occasionally breathy delivery conjures up a similar dreamy mood. She's at her best belting out a song, as she does on the powerful "Farewell." From quavering nightingale to sweet chanteuse, the singer has a wonderfully diverse stylistic palette, ably supported by Pilkington's warmer tones. The soaring "Wednesday Afternoon" is the pick to hit, although the propulsive "The Sky and I," the Celtic-flavored "Lochgelly Lives," the yearning "Are You Coming Home," emotion packed "Thank God You Found Me," and the upbeat, uptempo "The Town of Maybe" are all equally memorable. Vivid imagery, excellent storytelling lyrics, and thoughtful themes are what set Blackheart apart from the rest of the folkie-pop pack, putting this pair at the top of the acoustic class.
Customer Reviews
Fantastic, earthy, bewitching.
Bought this album after seeing the band perform live by chance, while on holiday in the Lakes. Their music is from the heart and forces you to drift off in to the 'flowing like honey' lyrics. The album is really good - if you like more modern folky type music with meaningful lyrics, rather then the usual drivvel which you often get with urban folk, you will love this album. They are also absolutely fantastic to see live if you ever get the chance.
Blackheart are wonderful
Bought this CD while seeing Blackheart on tour with Stackridge in April 2012.
By most standards I have a pretty large and diverse collection of music built up over the years, and I have to say this album has instantly become one of my all time favourites and one of the most beautiful and joyous and well crafted records I own.
I cannot recommend this music highly enough - it's wonderfully written, arranged and performed.
All the tracks feature songwriting and performances of the highest order. And Chrissy Mostyn has a voice to melt the hardest of hearts.
Had the album exactly 1 week now and have been playing it everyday. Love every song and every note.
Give your ears a treat and check it out, this record seeps into your soul. I wouldn't be without it.
