Album Review
Turin Brakes' third release blends the lighthearted escapism of their debut and the slickly produced escapism of their sophomore release for a satisfying, tambourine-slapping good time. Acoustic guitars are still the thing and Ollie Knights' voice is still a cross between Jeff Buckley and early David Bowie, but the songwriting has improved drastically. Knights and his duo partner, Gale Paridjanian, have never been considered the greatest lyricists, and while the somewhat improved prose on Jackinabox won't change that, the arrangements are much tighter than ever and cover up whatever lyrical deficiencies the charismatic, freewheeling attitude of the band doesn't. When they offer upbeat, infectious, neo-hippie numbers like the funky "Asleep With the Fireflies" (Jamiroquai for the acoustic set) or "Over and Over" (a playful, nearly cabaret song), the album excels and fits summery afternoons like a glove. The wistful ballads are more hit or miss, the widescreen "Road to Nowhere" being an example of direct hit with the meandering "Forever" being a tedious miss that feels totally out of place. Sliding guitars, xylophones, and electronic touches flush out the sound, and the duo's complete involvement with the recording — producing, engineering, etc. — gives it a comfortable, "at home" feel. Fans won't be disappointed in the least, and with so much growth displayed, they should probably make room for converts.
Customer Reviews
An emotive mix...listen and enjoy.
Bought Turin Brakes 'Jackinabox' purely on the strength of the 'Fishing for a dream' track. However, subsequent listens uncovered more little gems...I could wax lyrical about each and every track on this brilliant album but really it's easier if you just download it and enjoy it like i did. If like me you have this album take up permanent residence in your cars cd player then you could do worse than try the 'Brakes' first two albums...
A REAL FIND!
After a summer of listening to this album, it must rate as a contender for album of the year! along side The Gorillaz and Bloc Party. I had not heard a great deal of Turin Brakes, but thought that I would take a punt on Jack in a Box. After the second listen, I was hooked and it has stayed in my car all summer, only the Chilli Peppers managed this! Ollie Knights voice is quite unlike anything that I have heard before and his range is mind blowing! musically these guys are tight, they mix it up all the way through the album. I have just seen them live and was blown away by their ability! tracks to download are 1,2,5,11,12 although it hangs together so well as an ensemble piece, I would just buy the whole thing! These guys are a real breath of fresh air and I hope that they start to get some recognition. Go on download it...you wont regret it!!!
A Gem!
Not sure why this band haven't broken out of 'large cult following status', however what is the masses loss is our gain. Beautiful melodies, crafted tunes & wonderfully atmospheric. Highlights for me "Above the Clouds" & "Asleep with the Fireflies" With bands like this around the world really doesn't seem such a bad place!
